intake heater

what are the disadvantages in removing intake heater

The theory is more air flow. That heater element takes up something like 20% of the area of the intake. I've done this and haven't had any trouble whatsoever. I've done other things to my intake (see signature) and I have plenty of air now (have to kind of work at it to get it to smoke). I don't know that removing the heater element made a big difference but every little bit helps.

none, unless you idle long periods in very cold weather. One cool advantage to removing it is replacing it with a plug plumbed for turbo boost readout, available from blackclouddiesel .

ditto, unless you let your truck idle for long periods of time in the cold, don't worry about it. When you remove it though, the PCM might throw a code, but it doesn't effect how the truck runs.
