program surprise, now what?

My Ex was stacked and I didn't know it! (at least I think so)

I was having a problem with my engine stalling on every trip (not the way a CPS stalls). It would start right up again each time. Someone suggested it could be my Edge EZ. So I disconnected it and VOILA! No more stalling. Funny thing is, I didn't notice any loss of power after disconnecting. Still smoked plenty when I got on it. Then, the coup de grax (sp?) was when I reset my overhead computer. It was reading about 2x the actual mpg before I disconnected it (~33mpg). Well after resetting it, it STILL reads way high, now its saying about 29mpg. So I put one and two together: lots of power + lots of smoke + messed up overhead = program or chip. Right?

SO...now what? First I guess I need to know what exactly I have right? So I'll look and see if there is a chip installed. If so, will it have a manufacturer logo on it? Like DP Tuner, or Superchips, etc.? And what if there is no chip? Is there a way to find out what program or at least what brand of program has been uploaded to it? Can I take it to Diesel Innovations and have them look into my computer or what?

Re: program surprise, now what?

I take it you bought it with the Edge EZ already installed.. If so the previous owner may have also had an Edge Evolution. Those will backup the stock programming and install one of three programs, tow, performance or extreme. You would not be able to tell other than by using the Evolution to return it to stock. Just a thought

I suspect David Lott can look at your PCM and tell whether it's a stock program or a tuner program. If it's a tuner program, he can probably re-flash it back to a stock program. But before you do that, be certain there is not an Edge Evolution tuner stuck behind or under the back seat. If you find one, that's probably the culprit. The Edge folks are fond of "stacking" their products.

My edge Evolution doesn't smoke at all on the tow setting, but it smokes like a freight train at the higher-HP settings. So if you're getting black smoke without a chip, it's probably from a tuner program of some sort - maybe an Evo.
