school me on smoke!!

ok... i need some schooling on our trucks blowing black smoke. i was under the impression that this was the result of poor ignition or too much fuel not enough air at ignition. the leftover fuel and little air are then flushed out the exhaust, am i close? and if I am close, isn't this a bad thing for our trucks in the long run? thanks for clearing up the air on this for me!

Yep, conditionally.

If you are talking about the black solid smoke you get when using a chip. Generally you are just dumping a lot of fuel into the engine and not burning it as efficiently as one would like. If, typically, you have generally clear exhaust you are probably ok. If you have more particulates in the exhaust under excelleration that would be normal. Just like a gasser.

The year of your truck and, like a gasser, the miles on it will make a diference.

But, generally, the more particulates in the exhaust the less efficient is the burn.

You are correct in the fact that black smoke means wasted fuel there is no getting around that. What it comes down to is how much and what the situation it was created in. You can make just about any diesel smoke if you try to. Wrong gear with punching the go pedal will do it everytime. If you are just cruising around town and you look like a coal train smoke stake that is an issue. Looking from a performance standpoint a good shot of black smoke under full throttle off the line and then cleaning up very fast to just a haze, if that, is what you want and a sign of good tuning IMO. One thing I never got were those wanitng to blow smoke all over the streets all the time thinking it was cool. Those days are gone. Wastes fuel, piss off everyone else, feeds the fire of super tight emissions on our trucks..

Another way to look at is not enough air for proper combustion. When a turbo fails the exhaust smoke is real thick & black.

Black or gray smoke is partially burnt fuel. It's not "bad" for our trucks.

Unless you have a 6.0L, like mine, and the darker soot with increased particulates adds increased coke to the variable blades of the turbo and accellerates and multiplys the cleaning times.I would think. Would it not?

Soot can build up on a 6.0 turbo. Go wide open throttle everytime you drive it once it's up to operating temperature and the converter is locked. Should keep the cleaning intervals spaced out.
