Stock Intercooler with plastic end tanks?

when, if at all did ford make the switch from the all aluminum end tanks to the plastic tanks on the intercooler.

i was looking at stuff on blackclouddiesel.com and happened to notice the 7.3 to banks 6.0 intercooler and it showed a stock intercooler next to it, which happened to have plastic end tanks just like the radiator does.

just for S&G's i looked at mine today while i was replacing the mount for the fuel filter cover (didn't take it off and broke it while doing my ats housing) and noticed that mine has nice big aluminum end tanks welded to the core. should i investigate further to see if the former owner changed the intercooler to an aftermarket one, or did ford make a production change.

Re: Stock Intercooler with plastic end tanks?

You've got the stock cooler. My early 2000 excursion has aluminum tanks too.

Re: Stock Intercooler with plastic end tanks?

Late 2000 is when Ford switched to plastic tanks. So some very early 2001s had aluminum end tanks. The Oracles early 2001 had plastic tanks, when we installed his 6.0 CAC.

early super duty 7.3's had all aluminum and then switched to plastic. My 7.3 CAC that I pulled out of my 2001 has plastic tanks.

Re: Stock Intercooler with plastic end tanks?

My 99.5 had aluminum then when it got in its lil accident, it was replaced with the plastic end tank version. The body shop said he couldn't get the original version.

Re: Stock Intercooler with plastic end tanks?

so i should hang onto it? just from the pictures the plastic tanks look like they're alot more restrictive than those big cast aluminum tanks on mine

How big is big? My stock CAC has aluminum tanks but they aren't big IMO. In fact I would describe them as small and flat. You might have an aftermarket CAC.

Really all depends on how much boost you plan on making, the plastic tanks are not good for aftermarket turbo's that are pushing 40 lbs of boost regularly.
