Have a 2000 F250 4x4 CC and its stock. Want to get the most bang for the buck and all around performance. The superchip controller p/n #1705 looks great. Setting 3 has +120 hp and +200 lbs or tq. All this on a stock truck they claim. Also Hypertech has one with just less specs for $350. You cant touch these numbers with intake and exhaust. All this for under $400 What are the negatives to this. Both companys say there are none. More power better mileage, there has to be a catch. What do you guys think. Only want to buy a chip or programer one time but dont want to damaging my truck. Should I just anot get one? Need some help
First do a search of the forums, this has been discused too many times. I had* the 1705 SCT, and it was ok. If you going to add a programer to your stock truck and worried about damage, add gauges.

For the most part, the Hypertech is lame. You won't find many members here who have one. However, you will find many who have the SCMT and are happy, and then you have a few of us with the Predator. Then you have the majority of us who have the Edge Evolution and some (like me), who HAD the SCMT and switched to the Edge evo.
You can't really go wrong with the SCMT 1705. However, if you go with the Edge Evo, you will be amazed at the performance.
If you decide to get a tuner, make sure you get gauges. This is not an option... GET GAUGES!
Did I mention you need gauges?
You of course know that there's no such thing as safe power? Any incresed power increases your risk of problems down the road. If you want "safe power" stay stock. That said, there are thousands of TDS members running high power with no negative results, myself included. My oil tests come back excellent.

I have the 1705 and I love it. You need to get guages with added power like was said earlier. You mention you can't get this with intake and exhaust, are you referring to the power? Even though they say more Hp and Tq. with intake and exhuast, it is not really the case. These two items really allow your PSD to breath and keep exhaust temps. down with the added power of the programmer. Hope this makes sense.

I can only speak for the 1705 superchip. First get gauges with any choice. As you can see by my sig I am pretty much stock. I really don't know how much more actual HP or torque I get but I do know that pulling my 5ver up a 6% grade at 60mph all temps are ok and I have plenty of peddle left. The main reason I use it is because of the get up and go from a stand still. I couldn't take the slow start up with the stock settings.

Ok well I need gauges, but for what? Tranny,? EGT? Boost? Any one brand better then the next? Id like those pillar mounted gauges. What kind of time frame or difficulty is it to hook them up? Im not ASE certified but I know how to use a ratchet. Right now money is tight so what ones are "needed" and what ones are "nice to have"
Thanks.

I bought my Guages and 3-guage pillar pod from Dave Meheen (carnut74) at dieselpowerproducts.com which is a sponsor on this site. I went with the Di-pricol guages because they are built like tanks (designed for OEM industrial use) and match well with the factory guages. The pillar pod came pre-painted and matches the prairie tan interior perfect. I went with the normal EGT, turbo boost, and tranny which is the order they are mounted. If I was to do them again, I'd probably go in the order of Boost, Egt, tranny.
EGT gauge will provide your most important information. The boost and tranny are also good to have. You can do a complete three gauge with pod for under 300 bucks.
Ease of install is about a 4 on a scale of ten (and I am NOT a mechanic). No special tools are needed, but lots of info is important, so do a search on TDS here for all the info you'll need. Then do lots of reading beforehand to familiarize yourself to whats involved. You'll need an afternoon to get it all done.
Road Frog,
I like the look of the Accetoned emblems. Did you remove them from the truck to do that or can it be done on the truck? Cheap and it looks great. I like that!!!!!
I have an old hypertech I bought used a couple of years ago, it is a very mild tune, only about 50hp an 100ft/lbs. Nice improvement over stock, but nothing like the SC or Evo options available. I'd suggest picking up a nice used SC for around $250 for a good bang for the buck. Then get an EGT gauge and 4" exhaust and you'll be set.
