I was just wondering how hard it would be and what it consist of to switch a truck with an auto tranny in it over to a manual. or is this just dumb?

You could probably get a built auto for the price of the swap. I was told by a person I trust, that if I want to make big power and have it more streetable (than a super-grabby clutch in a 6-speed), that I should start planning an auto swap. Why do you want to? I guess I should have asked that first.

If you want to do the swap, the best bet would to get a wrecked SD with a good drive train. Otherwise you will be hunting down little nit-noid parts, or paying through the nose at the stealership. I love my handshaker, but I want to get up into the 400HP range, and at that point my clutch is gonna be an issue. For one that will hold the power it's going to be very "grabby" for a daily driver.

I belive you would need new drive lines, fly wheel, relocate trans cross memeber, pedal and connecting hardware, and alot of other things. You could get an unbreakable very well built tranny from ats, sun coast, BTS, monster box, and a few others for way cheaper. It will hold way more power and will shift and lock up like a dream. Upgraded auto is the way to go just make sure you get it from a good company not some ebayer claiming that it will hold 1200hp and it is only a 1000 bucks. If it were me I would go BTS but ats and suncoast also make very well built trannies. You can't go wron with any of them.

Hey bud...I abused the shiz out of my clutch...and the best stuff is from South Bend Clutch:
Tell him your application, and he'll set you up with the best clutch to get the job done. He is know to stand behind his product, and will not oversell you anything.
I sled pull, so I have the SBC DD 4200 COMP 12 CB, with the 12 Ceramic Buttons (48 total). For me, it's a little grabby off the line, but I tell you what, that suckers hooks up!! After this weekend, we'll see how it does pulling...the best part is that there's no increase in pedal effort!

Gotta change or modify the floorpan too.
The 6 speed case is larger than the auto so the tranny hump on the floor needs to be larger also.
I checked into doing the swap a year or so ago. I picked up a 6 speed floorpan out of a wrecked truck from a body shop just in case someday I decide to go ahead with the swap.
