Rapid bursts of air. Usually followed by jumpy boost gauge (tho mine didn't when surging) and lack of power. Feels to me like the truck doesn't wanna go any faster until it changes gears.
It's NOT the whoosh that comes out as the trans shifts or you let off the pedal. That's stall.
Basically, if you feel like your power is limited when that rapid sound comes in, it's surge.
