Question Turbo upgrade / California CARB-SMOG options?

I want to upgrade my stock turbo. I live in California and must comply with CARB to be smog legal. What are my options with that in mind?

Break off and hang with Hawaii :P

Really though, if you install a different turbo, your not going to change the emissions of the truck much. It injects fuel based on boost pressure and other sensors and has a certain programming to limit smoke on acceleration. You should still be able to pass all the tests you do now.

Emissions at full load and WOT might be higher because your burning more fuel from any added boost pressure. If you dont give it any extra fuel, the turbo isnt going to be utilized to its fullest other than spooling up faster.

Why dont you just get a flip chip and leave it off when you do the tests? It will give you more power when you need it. It will be a lot cheaper and might give you what you want. A pyrometer is recommended though.

I have the 38R and have had no trouble here in Ca passing smog. The turbo looks identical to stock to a smog tech.
