Upgrades and Aftermarket - 7.3L EngineUpgrading and adding aftermarket equipment to your 1999-Up Super Duty or Excursion with 7.3L Power Stroke diesel engine. Please confine discussion of topics in this forum to those items that are specific to the 7.3L Power Stroke engine.
Been thinking about giving one of these a try. For some reason my Garrett is only hitting about 32 lbs and I think its bleed off.. Just wondering if those who have the Turbomaster like them and if anyone has one on a Garrett Ball Bearing GTP38R?
Question. What problem will it solve? AFAIK, it is supposed to solve the problem of boost bleed and a weak spring which holds the wastegate in place. OTOH, I am not sure that the weak spring is really much of an issue, is it?

Not to argue, but my understanding is the OEM wastegate starts opening when boost gets to 7-8 psi and continues opening further until boost peaks at around 17-19 psi in an unchipped truck. The turbomaster as I understand it's operation maintains the wastegate closed until a threshold is reached when it opens. The point at which the wastegate opens with the turbomaster is set much higher and is adjustable.

I agree. However, what I am trying to accertain is whether it opens because of a weak spring or whether it opens because that is the design. I have used a Boostvalve and to make it simple, no boost got to the wastegate until it got to the preset pressure. For $45 it is a pretty sweet deal. Now, if the wastegate will still move under turbo pressure, the Boostvalve might not help.

I guess it would be mechanical versus computer controle. The pcm will try to give you better fuel milage. The Turbomaster just holds the wastegate shut till enough force opens it. This was my hesitation on the turbomaster. When I am cruising down the road where will my boost be. The stock junk might let the turbo bleed boost off so I can run lower boost at slow speeds or highway. My truck does great for fuel milage just want to keep it there. With my 6-speed it sounds like the Turbomaster would be excelent for me so I can get the turbo spooled up quicker with no open waste gate(at 7-8 psi). Well that is what was running through my head. JMHO

I have used the Boostvalve before and what it does is let the pressure build up till it is enough to overcome the check ball held in place by a spring. At which time, the air moves into the solenoid and opens the wastegate. Pressure drops, the check ball closes the air off and repeats. It does build up the boost way faster in my T3/T4 turbo and I think it would work for ours except it is a lot cheaper. That is why I wondered if the solenoid was being forced open by turbo pressure.

Yes the factory wastegate rod will be opened by boost pressure alone... The turbomaster works great! I had one on the stocker, the 38r and the TN... I am running the TN one now, just because I never put the turbomaster back on. If you adjust the stock rod you can control it to a certain extent...
Example, when I got the TN BB, I saw a max of about 34-35, I ajusted the WG to the point of locked down and got 50!!! Ajusted it down a bit and it sits at 40-42 now. All this with the factory PCM controls gone.
I think the TM is a great addition to a 6spd. My stock setup must have been bleeding off. With the addition of the TM and an exhaust at the same time, the boost builds much faster. I HIGHLY recommend this product. The first one that I got was defective and drove me nuts trying to make it work. I was sent a new one and it bolted up like a charm. Despite the trouble and downtime for the install, I am still very happy with it and would not want to part with it. The biggest difference is with the trailer, I can hold 3rd gear on hills that for the past 6 years I have had to drop to 2nd. I think the key is that it keeps the gate shut the whole time, until you set it to pop open at the desired boost.

So you are saying that if we took out the red hose going to the wastegate solenoid, the wastegate rod will not move? If that is the case, why not use the Boostvalve? For $45, I can control the boost to whatever I want. It will NOT bleed off any boost to open the wastegate till it reaches the preset pressure. Pressure drops, it closes the wastegate.

Well then I believe the TM would be the better decision. Not saying it is better But I believe the TM is the way to go. I will buy one and find out for myself.

I just like the idea of being able to adjust it without taking that stupid clip off and twisting the rod.... So much nicer to fine tune the wastegate...

I can do that with the Boostvalve too.
