Upgraded power steering pump

I am looking for a more reliable power steering pump than the stock unit. Does anyone know of one?

Thanks that is exactly what I am looking for. My second pump in a year is going out and want to take care of it for good.

I am also interested in that AGR pump. How hard is it to put in? Any mods or fabrication, or is it a drop in?

Thanks

Does this pump eliminate the loss of steering when using the brakes, without harming any of the other components like hoses, hydrobooster etc? Mine won't turn sometimes even when not using the brakes with larger than stock tires.

Have you tried flushing all of the old fluid out and replacing it with synthetic tranny fluid (remember the 7.3 does NOT use power steering fluid)? It can be amazing what good fluid can do in bringing some life back into the pump.

Good how-to write up here: http://www.superdutypsd.com//power_steering_flush.php

Does the AGR address the vagueness in the steering? My power steering is so vague it feels like I am piloting the QEII or the Goodyear blimp.

Fluids good. I don't think thats the prob because it's been doing it since new, and of course the dealer said it was normal as others on the lot did it also. Can anyone tell me if this pump solves this problem without having to upgrade other components like I stated above?

Not sure what you mean by "power assist"... Is the new pump a stock replacement or the AGR unit?

9 out of 10 times it is your ball joints. I had a new AGR pump and steering gear box they helped but definitely did not cure the problem. I believe to test for binding ball joints you remove the tie rod end and insert a bolt and attach a nut through the tie rod end on the spindle. Using a torque wrench it should take no more that 100ft lbs to turn the tire/hub assembly.

I flushed the fluid to no end, used Red Line synthetic fluid, used the AGR pump (it's a GM type pump) and the AGR steering box is an earlier type box and you will have to change the pitman arm to a 94-97 type, there is also additional fittings on the box for their "Rock Ram" system. I will be replacing my non greasable ball joints one of these days and braze up the cracked P/S pump canister and hopefully that will be the end of it... Or there is the $600 or so "Rock Ram" system.

I just went out and checked mine after I remembered I had it flushed by a local shop when I was too busy. It looks like they used power steering fluid, it's almost clear with a slight reddish brown color. The receipt says they used "BG Power Steering Fluid" It has been about 4,000 miles, it has worked well but I do notice a barely audible whine.

I just went to Autozone and bought 4 qts of Mobil 1 synthetic ATF and will flush it ASAP.

Question is, do you think any damage has been done by running the Power Steering Fluid for the last 4,000 miles?

From now on nobody touches my truck but ME. Really pisses me off, they also screwed up my new brand new tie rod end by blowing the grease boot out and not telling me.

AGR recommends Red Line as well as a couple of other local places local to me. But it did nothing for me. Make sure you pump the brakes plenty to get the fluid out of hydraboost.

Smokey has a pretty good proceedure for flushing and bleeding.
