USED 6.0 trans. cooler in 7.3

Any thoughts on using a used tranny cooler? Is it safe to use? How can it be cleaned? I tried on Ebay, and new are going for over $200.00. A used one is a lot less. Thanks a bunch for your replies

A 6.0 tranny cooler is just a fancy radiator. If undamaged, should be good if all cleaned out. You'll need the adapter fittings too. I see you've done business with John Wood, me too. Great guy. Give him a call. (760) 356-9421 or jwtt.com or johnwoodautomotive.com. He'll tell ya for sure. Very Smart dude.

I wouldn't use a used cooler. A trans rebuild is too much to cheap out on the cooler. I would be surprise if JW does't say the same thing. I am also surprised he didn' advise you on a cooler when you had the trans rebuilt.

No.

It can't.

Ford requires that the oil-to-air (OTA) tranny cooler be replaced with a new one any time a Ford tech works on a tranny. Unscrupulus folks at some unscrupulus dealerships take the old coolers out of the trash heap and sell them on e-bay. But the used coolers are usually full of junk that can't be cleaned out, but will slowly work its way out and ruin your tranny.

It's a lot less until it costs you a new tranny. Then it gets really expensive.

Would you take a used rubber and wear it for sex? Same thing with O-rings and trans coolers.

I would use one if I knew it's history and that history was satisfactory. I wouldn't use one if it had anything in it other than dirty oil. Berryman B-12 and compressed air or detergent and hot water work well for cleaning dirty oil.

Generally I wonder why you are selling it used. Now if the donor truck was totaled out and hit in the front, well..... If it was hit in the rear, probably might be ok. Usually, like it was mentioned, the tech is supposed to dispose of the trans if the install a new unit. Well, if the tech flushes it out and sells it as a used unit, do you believe that Ford wouldn't have had the tech do that and save warranty if they thought it was safe?

Like I said, if it comes out of a wasted trans, no thanx. Keep it. If it comes out of a known good working trans, a flush probably would suffice.
