What is involved with installing a guage package?

I've been toying with the idea of installing a pillar mounted three guage package (boost, pyro & trans. temp) on my truck. I drive a 99.5 7.3L psd with a manual trans. What is involved with installing these guages? I don't know how they tie into the system. If you purchase a gauge package, does it include the sensors or simply the gauges and mounts? I would also appreciate anybody's insight as to what packages are good and what to stay away from. I'd like to hear from the guys who have done this before and get some insight. I have looked around for a link on an install and as of yet haven't come accross one. Whats a man got to do for three gauges?

You don't need trans gauges for a manual.

It is pretty straightforward. I would do the AIH mod and put a nipple in for the boost gauge and drill a hole in the exhaust manifold for the EGT. It is all there on the website. http://www.itpdiesel.com/other/7.3L%...structions.pdf

Chilli,

As posted, you probably dont need a tranny gauge.

As for the rest, a good set will come with all the sensors. I believe you can get a 2 gauge set or 3 gauge set. They are pretty easy once you figure out what needs to be done.

I used the instructions from DieselManor and they were perfect.
http://www.dieselmanor.com/installsheets.asp

They suggest pre-turbo for the pyro which is what I did and wanted.

The tranny (automtic) was the easiest as it only has 1 wire from the sending unit. You might swap the tranny temp for a oil pressure. That would be my choice if I wanted 3 gauges.

The Turbo boost has 1 plastic tube. I drilled/tapped into the 'Y' piece in the center rear. I took the hose to the hardware store and matched the fittings to the drill/tap used for the pyro sending unit. Saved me about $20.00. See picture. You can use the plastic T and hose clamps, but I didnt want any additional places to leak.
[

You need 1 wire from the light turn on common to all gauges. I pulled the light switch box out at drivers left knee - just stick a screwdriver under bottom center and it pops out. I used either the bottom right or top right (dont remember) - check with test light whichever turns on with lights are on. I use a female wire tap connector - the type that 1 side folds over the wire and slices thru the insulation to contact the wire. I dont usually like these, but I only needed 1 into the factory wiring.

I did cheat on one issue. The tranny gauge required 1 wire for the light and an additional turn by key switch. I used the light turn on just to avoid running another wire. When I am concerned with my tranny temp I am usually towing. When I am towing I always have my lights on anyway...no problem.

There is a 4" knockout (foam and fiberboard) in the firewall where the clutch arm passes. Yours is used with a stick. Not sure what you will need to do here but it was easy with the automatic.

I connected all the light turn ons for the gauges while it was out. I put the mating T connector to the wire tap connector on the ends of all the necessary wires. I used the main turn on wire like a manifold with matching wiretap connector about every 4" where each gauge wires would be.

The rest was just a matter of connecting and pushing the wires and gauges into place. It all went quite easy.

Contact me if you would like more assistance.
Bruce

Why did you tap the manifold when you could have removed the AIH and tapped the plug?

My first response is I didnt want to remove anything to install something else.
Secondly, it came right out of the DieselManor instructions which worked flawlessly.
