Because, Brian's top build trans will cost you right around $4200 (don't quote me exactly on that, but I am within a couple hundred one way or the other), versus John's top build trans costing you $7400.
Ah, you want to compare apples to apples. That is going to take the fun out of the thread.

I personally have yet to see a trans cost $7400 from JW, so I don't know what that's referring to. Since I don't sell his transmission, I don't have a price list of what comes with what, but I'm quite sure you could call him and compare.

We offer 3 levels of performance transmissions from 350 HP to 1200 HP. Prices range from 4200.00 to 7400.00.

Damn....now I going to have to make a serious post .
From what I've seen of JW's trans prices, what is posted on his site is the max price it could cost you for a particular build. So if you bring in a completely destroyed trans, cracked case, and internals welded together (in other words it has no core value at all) then there's your price.
I ran a JW Stage 1 trans for a couple years back when I only was putting down 500rwhp. When I brought it back to have all billet parts (shafts and some other cool stuff) added, it looked brand new inside.
Also my JW Stage 1 trans which included a new trans cooler and a new radiator did not break the $4k mark.
I have to say Dennis, that is a great post. It was well written and thought out.
My only question is to the different builds......You (and many others) continually say that JW saves money for those who don't need a fully built trans, but Brian's "all for one" trans is the same money as JW's lowest cost trans.
This is copied directly from JW website:
So, really you cannot use the "it will save the low hp guy money" argument. Because, Brian's top build trans will cost you right around $4200 (don't quote me exactly on that, but I am within a couple hundred one way or the other), versus John's top build trans costing you $7400.
John actually has one level below the stage-1, the towmaster that comes with the 6L modified converter. This one runs $3,400 I believe, which would be cost savings for the customer and I believe the transmission is good for 350-400hp give or take so that should cover 98% of the powerstroke owners out there. I believe he told me around 400hp when I talked to him on the phone.
BTW, I concur the post from Dennis is excellent. Nice to see feedback from someone who has had experience running both transmissions.

Not to throw fuel in the fire again, but I still believe if you are going to compare apples to apples, the stage-1 tranny that John sells is comparable to the BTS. Both go for around $4k with a billet converter, billet input shaft. John's 7.4k tranny from what he told me is the same basic built tranny but with more expensive parts (billet, etc.) Not sure on all the exact parts. Probably have to call John to find out the details.

I was going by "your best vs my best". The best BTS has to offer is going to cost you $4100 and the best JW has to offer is $7400. But even if you want to compare it that way (price vs price), 5 yrs down the road, my BTS is still under warranty. The JW is out of warranty. Also, lets say I blow up my motor and put a new one with forged rods and crank it up with drugs, bigger injectors and what not. Now I am at 500HP. Well, the JW stage 1 was only rated at 400HP. Power wears out the trans. Will it still be covered? The BTS one is the last one you are buying.

According to the BTS website, the warranty is in fact 2 years. Now I have read that Brian will take care of his customers beyond that point which is great. But who is to say John would not do the same thing? Truth is that I have not read yet of any cases where a tranny went back to JW for warranty to know one way or another.
John told me my stage-1 would be good for 600hp. Beyond that point it might be worth considering upgrading to some more of the billet parts.

John told me my stage-1 would be good for 600+hp. Beyond that point it might be worth considering upgrading to some more of the billet parts.
Several people have said that BTS has warrantied the trans AFTER the 2 yrs and he does tell you that it is the last trans you will buy. Nobody said JW would not do the same. However, nobody has said JW would do the same either or at least nobody I have heard of here or on any other site.
I don't know. According to his site, the Stage 1 is NOT set up for 600HP. I would think the reason for stages is so that if you buy a Stage 1 and dump it behind an 800HP one, the breakage would show. IOW you could not "buy low" on him with Stage 1 and use it for Stage 3 purposes.
