Well, when I was at his shop, he did tell us that he ships all the same trannies to everyone. IOW, the internal components are the same. The only difference is that he makes sure it will run with your application. IOW, for a 300HP truck, he adjusts it one way. For a 700HP truck, the adustment is another way. Now if you are going to insist that it IS NOT 100% the same, I agree since he might change some of the valving, sprints, etc, etc. Now if you want to argue that the major components are different, that is a different story. IOW, if you want to say that the 2 trucks are not the same because one is white and the other is black, you got us there. If you want to say that the difference is just in the minor adjustments, that is far different a story. He is not like JW that charges more as you go up the stages to handle more power. Your stock truck tranny costs as much as if you told him you were making 800HP. The warranty is exactly the same, AFAIK.

Does the TC count as a major component???

I would say so. Why? AFAIK unless there is some exotic reason, they use the PI torque converters.

Yes, there is a PI converter in the dragster.

Are TC's one-size-fits-all?

Not sure what you mean. A 700R4 TC fits 700R4 transmissions. Stall speed might be different depending on application.

When you buy a PI TC, within 2 yrs they give you a free restall. After that, you pay about $400 for it. When my 700R4 gave, the TC was good but dirty. They cut it apart, cleaned it, rewelded and rebalanced it. At the time of cutting, they asked if I would want it restalled since it was already apart.

So yes, they are one-size-fits-all as far as I know. Stall speed is variable but TC is the same for the most part.

Check this out. This week, I hauled a friends 02 F350 CC LB 4X4 DRW to BTS. His tranny was done at BTS almost 4 years ago. The tranny had over 430,000 miles on it since Brian overhauled it. The truck is used commercially, pulling new RV's etc. The BTS "hand shake" warranty is 2 years unlimited miles. My friend had called Brian last Thursday, and told him he was having tranny problems. Brian told him to get me to haul it down, and He would take care off Him. We arrived in Lead Hill Sunday night, and Monday morning the surgery began. BTS installed a 6.0 tranny cooler, did a few maintenance items, and by late afternoon my friend was on his way home, with that "big smile". The cost for the new tranny was very little out of pocket. The other work at the normal cost.
I did not haul his truck back, because I had a hay bailer to pick up in Batesville,AR.
The bottom line, Brian was not obligated to do any "warranty" work. Brian, installed a $4100. tranny for a very low cost. Some may question if He builds the "best tranny", but going way above, and beyond to help a Customer is priceless.
A little extra info. My Friend, did not have the funds to buy a new tranny. Brian's generousity, kept my Friend in business, otherwise, He would be without any income, in the highest unemployment County in the Country. Brian, Patty, and the entire Crew at BTS, they are the best!

Don't know what? That every one of the transmissions he had at the shop on the shelf had a pink TC? I don't know their particular stall but I do know the TC can be restalled if necessary because of engine requirements. So yes, technically they TCs are not the same if you are talking stall speeds. I'm sure the VB settings are different so I guess it is not the same trans if you want to be technical.

When I spoke to John about his different stages, he basically said that the core transmission is built the same across the stages, but the higher stages come with more billet parts. You are getting something out of spending more money. The upgraded parts that come with the higher stage might give someone the confidence that their transmission will hold up for a specific application.

Also, the rated HP #'s are pretty much irrelevant for the vast majority of us. 99.999% of the powerstroke owners will never see more than 325 HP at the wheels. John has a great transmission for the average person that will never see the very high HP #'s, I believe priced at $3,400. This would be a $700 to $800 savings compared to BTS or John's stage-1. That savings could go to something more useful and might be a substantial savings to the average buyer. The buyer has options if they go the JW route.

I don't think I meant to say that he just sticks a higher price just because. I agree that the higher priced unit gives a little more than the lower priced unit.

Yes, you do have options going with JW. I don't think the percentage of people who exceed 325 at the wheels is that low but here is my take on it. Usually, when I buy the cheapest option thinking to myself "This is all I need or want", I tend to find out later on that I should have gone up at least one more level. Now it costs me more. See the truck in my sig? I planned to only go with a chip initially. Didn't think I would want more. Do I think I will stop here? Probably not. This is why when I buy something, I figure out what I need and go up a couple of steps. That way I grow INTO something as opposed to growing OUT of something. I have found that to be a cheaper way to go.

Just want to attest to what Highwayprisoner has said. Wife and I were at BTS the very next day to have our new tranny installed and Brian showed me this torque converter with 430,000 miles on it.

I was amazed. And being a new BTS tranny owner and having experienced the wonderful hospitality of Brian, wife Patti and the rest of the crew, it is not surprising Brian would do an act of kindness for customer who needed help as mentioned above.

TooCoolToo, welcome to the BTS Bubba Association! Glad you all got to make the trip, unfortunately, we missed meeting, by just a few hours. I am sure you are experiencing " BTS Mobilin", ain't nothing like it!
It is hard for people to understand, why we are so estatic about the "BTS Experience". Maybe, they will be fortunate in the future. Enjoy the "new" truck.
