Why are my temps always warm?

Ok well to me my temps seem hot, or is it just me.

Grossing about 14k on flat ground at 70 mph 2000rpm just under 10lbs boost tranny is 175degs to 180 ( note mods in sig) 900deg egts sometimes going down a little and up to over 1000

Going up a hill i can hold 60 in drive and maintain 1300degs at about 15lbs boost

Something seems wrong. I do have a small up pipe exhaust leak I know of. And I get a squeel from the turbo it sounds like that come and goes on and off going up some hills

Re: Why are my temps always warm?

Well first of all at 60 mph uphill and you boost is only at 15 and your pulling 14k, that aint a bad temp at all. The skipping sound your hearing is the turbo surging because your rpms are prolly under 2k. Try downshifting and keeping the rpms up and the boost a little higher.

Your temps aren't bad so don't worry about that part. Just need a little change in the method of pulling.

Re: Why are my temps always warm?

That the weight of the truck and trailer loaded. And I did down shift to drive and turn 2500 rpms up the hills.
I never got over 22lbs of boost this time and before I could get 28lbs. When I left I had to go thru traffic so my tranny did get to 200degs but its was slow going for a while.

I just don't see how I could tow anything much heavier, what if I got a trailer that was 8,000lbs empty and I put another 6,000 in it, seems like I would be in 4low going up some hills.

Re: Why are my temps always warm?

Ok, you didn't say that in the first post.

Hmm, do you have a boost regulator on?

Is your wastegate unplugged?

What programs do you have on the chip and what one's have you tried towing in?

How does the truck run unloaded? And was the water/meth on when you were towing?

Re: Why are my temps always warm?

All the turbo stuff is hooked up, I had the wastegate linkage comeoff before and it stuck open i belive, but I pulled it back and hooked the rod back up and got a clip for it.

I have the DI 6 pos chip high idel stock 50 75 100 140, tried all the power settings and its about the same. When I had the 4 pos chip my egts were way high too.

Truck runs good unloaded but Iam still not seeing the same 28lbs of boost I use too. I have no boost leaks either.

Water/meth was on the whole time, I could not tell anydrop in temps when i would turn it off thou. I did use about 10 gallons for under 500 miles, from sacramento to coos bay oregon on I-5 and hwy 42 in OR

Re: Why are my temps always warm?

Get your RPMs up. 2,500 is more like it. Pulls more cold air through the intake and cools your stuff off with a quickness. Also, what power level are you running at? Seems to me your temps aren't all that bad at all. Sometimes you have to downshift even if the truck doesn't feel like it needs it, to pull more air through to cool it off.

Also, the guy talking about running water/meth, you probably won't notice any EGT drop unless you just run straight water. Adding meth adds heat, it is a fuel, too.

However, I am convinced that a guy could tow a lot more weight with just some more RPMs under the hood, and turn your chip down or off altogether when pulling the grade.

75 MPH @1900 RPM, on a 95* day, my truck runs 700*-800* unloaded. I have big tires too.

FWIW,

Re: Why are my temps always warm?

My point was your temps seem pretty normal/low for a loaded truck.

I saw lower towing temps when I went from a programmer to a chip.

Re: Why are my temps always warm?

n2quads:

I ran the SCMT programmer for a couple of years. We probably take the same trips out to Fallon etc. Even out there on the flat desert I could have egt issues. I finally got rid of the SCMT and put in 4 position chip from DP tuner. Night and day difference! More power and cooler EGT's overall. Did I mention more power??? My truck will pull my LOADED 33' 5er, (4 quads, 100 gal water, 40 gal fuel, tools, compressor, wife, kids blah blah blah etc) over Donner Summit at 65+ mph. EGT's at 1150/1200.

I once got stuck behind a big rig on a 5% upgrade. Slowed to about 40 mph. Traffic cleared and I put my foot into it. Driving it right at 1250 EGT, I was up to 60 mph in no time. It just keeps on pulling!

Sorry to sound like a cheerleader here, but Jody's tunes have given me a new truck.

Brian
