If all you want is car to car (like in a caravan) for short conversations you'll be ok. But these little hand held units perform poorly for anything more and will heat up pretty fast if you talk very much. Unless you really want a CB I'd get some of those family radios to use around camp and car to car. Plus you won't have to listen to some of the foul language used by some of the CBers. If you really want the CB then go for a full size unit with full size antenna, you'll be much happier with that.
I used one of those once....... Their range is very limited. Even using the external antenna, I could only get out about a half mile. IMHO, there are a lot better choices for a CB than a handheld. As was stated, if the main purpose is to talk when outside the truck, the little "Family radios" are a much better choice. If the main purpose is for road reports, etc... then a full fledged CB with a full sized antenna is a better option and if cab space is a premium, there are some fairly compact radios that would do the trick....

Check out the cobra 75wx I think is what it was. All in the microphone type. I had one in my 98 gmc that I traded in on my f250. Should of kept it but was to lazy to remove it. Uses a regular cb antenna jack on the hidden part. I ordered the cb antenna to fm radio antenna deal to work with it from jc whitney. Worked great. Ive seen others with the converters before and they had mixed results along with ones I had used in the past sucking pretty bad but his worked great.
I mounted mine under the seat but hidden up in the dash would work too. All you ever see is the mic itself.
Figure on about 3 miles range normally.

I've just recently installed the Magnum 30 which is a very compact CB that puts out 30 watts, which for you non-cb'rs is a good bit of power. And its a fairly inexpensive rig too. It will even fit in the little cubby hole in the dash.
I currently have that radio in my truck right now. I used to have a nice Cobra unit, but that got stolen. So I wanted something a bit smaller. Looked at the cobra 75wx, but did not like the fact that I could not use it out of the vehicle. So I looked at the midland model. Liked the fact that it was portable, small and easy to hide when not in use. I have no idea the range it has though. I have a 3-4 foot whip antenna on the roof, with a mag mount. I mostly listen to what is going on out on the road. The weather function is good also.
The only downside to it, is that the buttons on the face do not light up at all. Makes it hard to change channels at night. Normally I turn it on and just leave it on the same channel.
I will eventually get a full sized model, But I have to build a center console first to mount it to. So for now this works fine for me

I'm a huge fan of the now discontinued K40 CB radio. Maybe find one on ebay... I have one in my F250 and also my CJ-7 jeep. Very small, powerful, and high quality.
Best radio i've every had was a Galaxy DX 33 HML . I bought one 17 yrs ago when i first started driving Big Trucks, still got it today. I currently run it in my F-350, and use a Galaxy DX 99v which i purchased back in 1997 in my KW . I run Wilson antennas on my KW and a MonkeyMade on my F-350. My next upgrade for the KW will be the new DX 98 VHP.
