Dahl 100 Fuel Filter/Water Separator Installation??

I was not expecting the filter to be sooooo big. Installation seems to be straightforward except.....where do I mount it so that it doesn't hang down so low? The truck is a 2001 F250 shortbed. You guys rock; the short amount of time I've been on the forum I've gotten several questions answered.

Hopefully I'll eventually learn enough to provide information rather than only ask for it...

I hung mine on the rear driver's seat bolts. They place the Dahl right behind the transfer case on a 4x4. I had only one bolt protruding through the two anchors. So I bought a nut for the one bolt and I tapped the other anchor and inserted a bolt from the bottom. You will have to elongate the bolt holes a little on the bracket to make it fit.

Re: Dahl 100 Fuel Filter/Water Separator Installation??

What Hammer said or make a bracket like this. Actually, I eliminated the bracket and mounted directly to the seat bolts as described by Hammer. There is little clearance issue even when hanging down from the bracket.

Re: Dahl 100 Fuel Filter/Water Separator Installation??

Hammer...thanks for the info. Hauln'...thanks for the picture. I got under my truck (non 4x4) and the seat bolts are Perfect . I noticed that I could either drill the holes on the bracket to fit the bolts or drill new holes in the middle. Would drilling bigger holes be too weak in your opininions? Should I drill new holes in the middle for strength? Either way do you know what size and thread count nuts I would need?

How did I miss those bolts.... .

Also, did you use a pipe cutter to cut the metal fuel lines? How do you depressurize the fuel line?

Thanks so so so much!

I ran 3/8" rubber 30R7 fuel line from tank to the filter, I don't use the meatl line any more.

Re: Dahl 100 Fuel Filter/Water Separator Installation??

Use a tubing cutter like for plumbing tube. The fuel system on these doesnt "HOLD" pressure really. The truck starts on what is in your fuel filter housing,,and when the pump starts it keeps the fuel bowl full. I think the HEADS may stay pressurized some,,with a check ball in there...but not sure.

Re: Dahl 100 Fuel Filter/Water Separator Installation??

The supply line is not under pressure at all. It is a suction line. But, to answer the above statement, the fuel system bleeds down completely after shutdown.

Re: Dahl 100 Fuel Filter/Water Separator Installation??

Curiosity begs the question: What is the fascinaion with Dahl? We used them on our equipment fleet many moons ago, and they were not even close to Racor's in quality and filtration.. We dumped a bunch of them in the trash and went all Racor... Have they improved??

Re: Dahl 100 Fuel Filter/Water Separator Installation??

I have not done a direct comparison, however the 2 micron filter in the engine compartment uses the same filtration media/principles and I rarely saw any water in the fuel filter when I drained it. The Dahl filter (2 micron in my case) separates several tablespoonfuls of water every 3000 miles. Sometimes it could be measure in multiple oz.s of water. So in my opinion, the Dahl is a more effective water separator and it flows with minimal restriction.

I just won a Dahl 200 off of EBAY for $43. I'm thinking that I'm going to have to mount this thing on the roof. I had no idea how big it was.

Kinda hard to imagine a better filter unit that goes down to 2 microns and separates the water so well. OEM filter 10 microns Dahl-2 micron @ 80gph truck needs 40 gph.

Racor good product also but what was used to conclude the Racor is so superior to cause a businessman to trash the Dahl's into the dumpster...?.....

I almost bought a new one off Ebay about a month ago as well. Then I found out how tall it was (16.75 inches) but think of this, you probably won't have to change the filter but every 100,000 miles. The only option you have, is to mount it in front of the back drivers side wheel, I believe there is about 18in or room there. That's where I was going to mount the Dahl 150 I was going to buy but bought a little Dahl 65 (same filter Bob's uses in his basic fuel system package) off Ebay for $21.00 shipped and decided to use that one until I get a bigger fuel pump that flows more volume than stock.

Re: Dahl 100 Fuel Filter/Water Separator Installation??

I mounted mine like THIS.

It's mounted to a piece of flat stock welded to the frame. It was hanging a bit low for my liking so I actually have it tilted at an angle and it's protected by the skid plate.

Does anyone know if mounting it at an angle (~30*) affects the operation of the unit? I'm not so worried about water seperation, since out here in CA I have yet to get much if any water in my fuel. I have been getting air, even after the in tank mods though. Maybe I have to get myself an air dog.

BTW- I used a "full flow" valve from McMaster-CARR. It has a larger, full sized opening through the ball valve.

[/ QUOTE ]

The OEM in valley filter for the 7.3L is also 2 microns.

Also, the flow rate specifications for the Dahl 100 are 40gph recommended and 65 gph max and it will do just fine in our applications with a stock pump.
