Need some relay help

Ok I have an 05 F350, I installed one of these Light Bars on my truck on top of it I put 2 of these Lights the bumper uses the two bolts on either side of your tow hooks. Ok so I followed the wiring diagram to put in a bosch type relay. pos 85 went to my Upfitter switch #1 post #30 pos battery 30amp fuselink post #86 ground to body post #87 went to lights Black wire. Post #87a empty and the white wire from lights went to a ground on frame. Now every time I switch on the lights I blow the fuse for my Upfitter, so I bypassed the relays and went Upfitter switch to black wire and lights and Pop fuse again. Is it possible the lights are double grounded or is there such a thing I dunno but I have blown 3 Upfitter fuses and $2.99 a pop aint cheap. help

Re: Need some relay help

Actually pin 85 is to the ground and pin 86 is to the switch. I don't know if that's what is causing the fuse to blow but it sounds more like you have a power wire grounding out somewhere. Check for pinched wires, cuts and ect.,.

What size of fuse are you blowing. If those lights are 130 watts each, they shouldn't draw more than 20 amps. Your probably blowing the upfitter fuse when you wire it direct, because I don't think those switches are fused that high (that's what the relay is for, to handle the higher amps).

I've done this enough I should know but CRS settin' in:

Check your lights black and white wires, which one should go to hot vs ground.

Check the side of the relay, it should have a wiring diagram. #30 is the 20/30 amp power input and I believe #87 is correct.

Hope this helps.

Re: Need some relay help

Day 2

So 85 goes to ground 86 to upfitter switch 30 to battery and 87 to lights hit the switch Popped the fuse but this time its the fuse at the battery. So I remove the lights from the bumper. put them on the ground in a cardboard box. White wire to ground. Black wire to pin 87 hit the switch bingo lights come on. Put lights back on bumper POP goes the fuse. What gives.

Re: Need some relay help

Are the lights isolated from the light bar by some kind of insulator. If it works with the same wires sitting on cardboard, and doesn't work when connected to the light bar, you have a ground issue.

Re: Need some relay help

It sounds like the lights have a short in them (a power wire inside the housing is grounding to the housing). If you got them locally, take them back and get another set. If you bought them online, take the housing apart if you can and check for any loose connections, bare wires, and ect.,.

Reverse your wires at the lights.
