Overhead computer fix, it works

I may be way behind the curve on this one but I stumbled across this a couple of weeks ago. It's a free step-by-step on how to fix the overhead trip computer if it flickers or does not light-up at all.
If you've seen it before I appologize, I just want to save someone from wasting a couple hundred bucks on a new one.

Just want to second this post. I performed the fix on mine today and it works like a charm. I feel like I won the lottery not having to replace the entire overhead info center!!

The overhead 'puter fix worked for me too. One of the capacitors was totally disconnected on one side. I sharpened my cheapo soldering iron and bought some super thin solder. The fix really worked. I'm a happy F250 owner now.

Nice write-up. Where is this circuit board located when in the vehicle?

The circuit board is actually attached to the display itself. Once the cover is pulled off the overhead console, you’ll see where it is.
Just be careful when removing the cover in northern climates this time of year.

Not the sharpest tool in the shed... O.K., how do you get the cover off of the ceiling?
I see the two tabs inside the cubby hole, do you lift, pull, push...?
Any insight from the successful removers?

put your hands to the front and pull down(front= closest to front window) it will pop and come down in the front, th rear has a little catch to it look close after the front part is loose and you will see. it also will need to be pulled down, but make sure you see the catch.

Well, that was interesting. The center console comes off o.k. (little scary) but I managed to get the computor to my bench.
After cursing at my weller soldering iron I realized I was trying to use wire for my wire-feed welder as solder.
Back on track.
Found solder... of course its about 3/8 of an inch wide (not really but seemed that way). I had (5) resisters loose.
Put 'er back in and fired truck right up.
Went to giver a little throttle to bring up R's... no response (what the heck).
Realized NO gauges worked... 'bout crapped my pants!
Blown fuse, unplugged computor, change fuse, all is well.

Moral of story and question, where can I find another trip computor and do I need to start new post for that Q? Cuz I toasted that puppy good.

You probably have too much solder on the board and have managed to short across two thingies that shouldn’t be touching. You might not need a computer just yet. Remove it once more and try taking it to someone who knows circuit boards, like a TV repair shop. It'll be cheaper than a 150.00 e-bay salvage special that probably has the same problem as your old one.

That's exactly it, I'll give it another shot. I've worked worked on a few circuit boards before with good results. I do have to say, I've seen nicer factory work, my boards a little rough right out of the box.
Thanks for direction 428INTERCEPTOR, we shall overcome!
