question about mudflaps and splash guards

Need some input,

What is the difference between mudflaps and splash guards? Is there value in having the flap wrap around the fender as in a molded guard versus a straight guard? I have read about using the 3m tape to protect the paint and that is what made me think of just using a straight flap. What is the purpose of the stainless steel like I saw with the diamond plate? Is it just a looks thing?

I hope you will pardon my "stupid" questions, but I have no clue and want to make wise decisions. Now that we have a awesome truck, we would like to keep it that way.

We will be pulling a 5th wheel on trips if that makes any difference. Thanks for all your help guys.

Lea

Re: question about mudflaps and splash guards

The terms seem to be used interchangeably by the manufacturers. This is what I would call a Mud Flap , and is what I installed on my Excursion. The stainless steel is just for looks, and if I had it do to over I would re-think that as they are really hard to keep looking nice in snow/slop country. Not so bad in the summer. These can also be a bit of a pain to install as there are no guides or patterns to follow. But you can also put them where you want. I have mine a little low, but it looks OK and really keeps the slop off of the bottom of the truck. Overall, I am really plesed with them.

This is what I would call a Splash/Mud Guard . These are easier to install, but you have no adjustment room as far as having them lower or wider in a spot.

Other manufacturers have the terms reversed or call them something else.
