Remote Starters

OK So we all know it is getting cold and I am wussing out. I want to install a remote start so I can warm up without going outside. Yep Americanism at it's best, too lazy to walk 30 feet and start my truck.

So what brands have we found to work best?
Are there issues with starting when real cold out?
Do I need to still screw a key under the steering column to work the anti-theft with the remote starter?
which brand offers the most features too? ( ie; door remote, alarms, seat warmer, coffee maker, wife gag.......)

There's a lot of options on Amazon with user reviews. I have one, not installed. Its a lot of wiring and wire hunting. There are wire color charts with locations just for our trucks. And some do have optional "aux" functions so if you wanted to do something like a relay to a coffee pot, passenger seat taser....etc

Yep I have found over 20 brands but they all look like the same Chinese make. The wire part is nothing for me but I was hoping to hear from someone that found one that was great not just reviewed by a housewife that never looked under the hood. Of course my wife will rave about the greatness of the warm truck but how long it works and the risks of the install....... I like the Banks 6 gun but the wire taps are terrible and the cause of many faults. I don't want to add to the truck something that will cause later codes and interference with performance.

If DP Tunes offered it with their chip I would be sold in a heart beat.

You want to find electronics not made in china

Actually I do believe mine was made in the U.S. I'll look. Wiring is wiring. I may do my own crimping and connections. But it is straight forward, just a headache. Many reviews are people like you and me reviewing products...unless you dont trust reviews of people like you and me. And some people come back and review after a couple of years.

Just found my old order. I ordered mine from SonicElectronix.com. This has long time reviews:

Python 533 (5303P) 2-Way Security System w/ Remote Start

Don't get me wrong Rammertide, I buy a lot of China made as I install security camera systems. It is just that I see the packaging is identical with several local brands.

As far as opinions....... well lets just say I prefer opinions on this site over amazon when it comes to the 7.3 PSD. If we say it works well I would hold much more weight than if some housewife or stockbroker said it on amazon. BTW I also buy a lot on amazon.

I use a viper alarm for my remote starter. I had to add a pulse timer for the wait to start. Its fully adjustable as far as run time and pulse delay. I self installed the whole system in about 3 hrs.

I have the python remote start installed on my truck. I didn't install it, I had a local stereo shop install it. I got the one that you can start the truck from your phone, it is cool as hell when it is working. With the phone it is hit or miss if it is gonna work. I got it last Christmas and since then have carried the extra clicker in my pocket more than not just to make sure I could get into the truck. I am going to have the Bluetooth add-on installed in the next couple of months. That should help with it being more reliable.

From what I understand is that the system runs off of AT&T and if they don't have good service the phone can't communicate with the truck. The first week that I had the system my wife and I were locked out of the truck for 20 min, she was pissed! I couldn't get the kill switch to work and finally it just unlocked with the phone.

If I was going to do it over again I would still get it but I would have done the Bluetooth add-on right from the get go. Hope this helps.

That is exactly what I was looking for. I know a shop that has the EVO and I might just get it. Yes with the blue tooth. I will see what else comes up. I was mostly worried about the diesel startup as the gassers are much easier. (No glowplugs)

I also have the viper and it starts the truck fine in these new england winters, it has the delay like someone else above was talking about, sometimes it just takes hitting it twice or 3 times if its ReAL cold.

I have an Avital installed on my 6.0 Eddie Bauer Excursion. Works flawlessly, had it installed by a local shop. No complaints so far.

I have a Stelllar installed in mine and like it. I got the Stellar mostly because I liked the keyfob. I installed it myself and it was a huge PIA...highly recommend having someone install it that does it all the time. There was an issue between the remote and the truck computer that I fought during installation but somehow I got it working..that's where an installer should know what to do.

Compustar works with the diesels. Our local guy installs them all the time for diesels. he extends the delay to 25 seconds or so. They sell exclusivly Compustar Compustar.com and will no longer deal with Viper as he said viper was purchased by a company that now puts sub-standard electronics in the devices. He said he was geting viper controlls dead right out of the box which in turn delayed servicing his customers. I called some of his diesel customers and they are totally satisfied with the compustar product. Now I am saving up $385 to get mine. 133 of the way there!
