superduty car computer touchscreen?

Anybody running a "carputer" in their superduty? What screen did you use in the double-din stereo opening and how do you like it?

I got an older thinkpad T22 laptop from a friend which I'm repairing (needs new mobo - loses cpu fan control - got one on ebay cheap). Then going to get a docking station. I already got a 12v to 16v power supply to run it.

If you've never heard of this stuff check out:
MP3Car.com - Your source for mobile computing solutions! - Home
https://www.timekiller.org/carpc/index.php

Do a search on google for "car pc".

Anyway, I figured a $200 laptop with decent power and getting a docking station (ebay cheap) would be a better solution than a dedicated car pc for $500+. If you install a $15 docking station in every vehicle you own you take your tunes with you.

Just need to find a decent computer fm tuner.

They make external usb or firewire dvd reader/writers too. Only your wallet and your imagination are limits.

I used one of those FM tuners once. I hated it, seemed like the power was so low I couldn't pick up a good signal with it on the dash in the middle. I just bought a DF-FORD20 Aux Interface from Crutchfield and love it. Plug and play. Seriously. It was $70 or so and took me all of 5min to install. Just don't run your audio wires next to the power wires or you'll get bad noise. Or just run a shielded wire and you should be find as long as your system is properly grounded.

I have yet to actually install mine but I got the puter all built and pretty much 90% of my parts. I got the same user name on mp3car.com as I do here, whats yours? I am looking at going a bit bigger screen wise, actually its what got me hooked on the entire idea all together. This thread here is what made me take the plunge into the whole project GREAT DEAL: 10.4" Touchscreen - Samsung LCD $215! - MP3Car.com I picked up a 10.4" screen new 10.4 Desktop TFT LCD Monitor w Touch Screen + VGA I have yet to install it in the truck but I have used it for a little bit while setting up the computer and fiddling with the FE (using Road Runner) So far its been pretty sweet and I am really looking forward to getting it all isntalled. I'm not sure yet exactly how I am going to tackle it but I know that the LCD panel itself will fit in my dash (05') without moving the AC vents, however the heater controls need to be moved.

Not a carputer but I just installed an Eclipse DVD/NAV in my '01. What I learned was ya don't get a 'true' double-din opening until '05. The earlier trucks are just a little shy of 4" tall opening. Sounds like you're not using too many 'off the shelf' components so it shouldn't matter, but I was suprised. I was able to fab my own mounting system/brackets and it turned out good, but it was not plug-n-play!!

I started with an IPAQ 3835 and test installed my truckputer last fall. It was great on our trip to Florida with navigation, music, OBDII (for those pesky SES lights) and paying my bills online. I took the system out to finish the install and make it more user friendly. You may want to consider keeping your head unit if it is a decent one. The computer's audio output can be sent to the head unit via a PIE (or similar) adapter. I mounted the monitor on a custom bracket on the center console.
Good luck and have fun. This is a hobby that a lot of people enjoy.
