Tuff Country 2.5 leveling kit. INSTALLED !!!

Just got through installing this leveling kit, and boy howdy does the look, "look good"!!! No more sagging front end. After measuring, it actually raised the front end about 3.5 inches, maybe a little more.
While I had everything apart, I replaced the front pads too.

I do have a little issue, the steering wheel is 90 degrees out of phase now. I have an appointment to get the front end aligned Thursday, after I get some new sneakers.
Will the alignment fix the steering?

Any help will be sorely appreciated!!!

Thanks

Re: Tuff Country 2.5 leveling kit. INSTALLED !!!

Your steering wheel is off because the lift moved your front axle over and it is no longer centered under the truck.

A drop track bar bracket or an adjustable track bar will fix this correctly.

Re: Tuff Country 2.5 leveling kit. INSTALLED !!!

Did you put the trac bar relocating bracket on? If not by moving your axle down you have changed the geometry of your steering system. Not enough to cause any problems, just enough to notice the steering wheel isn't in the same spot it used to be.

Re: Tuff Country 2.5 leveling kit. INSTALLED !!!

Well... maybe that is the problem duh huh, cause I put the trac bar relocating bracket that came supplied with the kit, but I could not re-attach the trac bar. It acts as though its about a half inch too long. The instructions said that once I put weight back on the suspension that it should fit, NOT... I just have it zip tied up so it will not catch on anything. I was thinking of driving up on a cinder block with the right tire and seeing if that would help any??

Any other ideas??? You all were right on the mark about the trac bar. I was gonna let the alignment people put it back on...

Thanks !!!

Re: Tuff Country 2.5 leveling kit. INSTALLED !!!

Try jacking it up.It's hard to reinstall the stock trac bar without a lift let alone with new bracket and lift.Don't drive the truck though until you get it reinstalled,zip-ties won't cut it!If your having a hard time installing the bar imagine the $ the alignment guy is going to charge for the PITA!

Re: Tuff Country 2.5 leveling kit. INSTALLED !!!

Well, talk about PITA… I was working late Saturday night trying to get this kit put in. I had take everything off the instructions talked about, and was working on adding the leaf springs. I got the driver’s side done, not too bad, then about 10pm Sat. night, I start on the passenger’s side springs. There is centering bolt that comes with the kit and I must of stripped/scraped it putting it through the leafs. Because, as I was tightening it up, what happens??? It binds up and as I was trying to take the nut back off, it snaps the bolt in two pieces.
What luck (*&%$^
To make a long story shorter, after about 28 phone calls. I found one in a neighboring town’s NAPA. They open on Sunday at 10 am. I also got some brake pads while I was at it.
It’s all back together except the trac bar, and that will get done Monday morning.

With all that said, does anyone know what the largest size tire will go on the stock rims?
I have 285-75-16 now and would like to go up to maybe 305-75-16. If not them, then I want to go to 295-75-6’s. Anyone Know???

Thanks for everyone’s help !!!

Re: Tuff Country 2.5 leveling kit. INSTALLED !!!

You may be able to take a ratchet-strap and pull the axle over into place to where you can attach the track-bar.
After you have it aligned and the SW is still off a little, then simply loosen the lock nuts on the drag-link coupler and turn it a few turns one way or the other and it will bring the SW right into place.
Just DON'T forget to re-tighten it!

Re: Tuff Country 2.5 leveling kit. INSTALLED !!!

Ford F250/F350 w/diesel engine 2000-2004 2.5" (2) 82201 (1)22958

These are the part numbers I installed. 2each 82201's and 1each 22958.
Click on the link above to find Tuff Country's website and the links as to the installer/retailer in your area. The company I talked to in NC said that they have literally done thousands of these leveling kits and everyone likes them.
So far I can't say anything other than it wasn't too hard to install with a floor jack, two hydraulic jacks and two jack stands. Did I say it looks real good!! I measured just a while ago, and it lifted it 3.25 inches. Maybe that will go down a little but still looks good!!!

Re: Tuff Country 2.5 leveling kit. INSTALLED !!!

I'm gonna try to do what you say, but after tightening the 8 bolts that are on the 4 U bolts (two on each side) that hold down the axle to 120 ft.lbs. of torque by hand on the ground.
My hands and arms were shaking after I did all that. I couldn't even hold a glass of water to drink for about 10 minutes...
Think I'll wait till Monday evening when my 22yr old son comes by the house and sucker.. I mean ask him to help.

Thanks for all the help!!!

Re: Tuff Country 2.5 leveling kit. INSTALLED !!!

The ratchet strap idea is good! I am running 315's on my stock rims but an 8" rim is recommended. post pics when your done!

Re: Tuff Country 2.5 leveling kit. INSTALLED !!!

RoReRi -

All you have to do is have 2 people there... Set the truck back on the ground with everything attached except for the track bar. Have one person turn the steering wheel while the other person slips the bolt through the track bar bracket. By turning the wheel with the tires on the ground, and the track bar attached only to the axle-end, it will be very easy. Hope this helps!

Re: Tuff Country 2.5 leveling kit. INSTALLED !!!

I think your wheel is off because your pitman arm. When you drop the axel it is pulling the wheel, the trac bar might help, but im betting your wheel will still be off because the pitman arm. If its still off after you reatach the trac bar and your turning radius is still good just get the steering wheel spun/straightened out. This is just my guess. I have some experience with 4x4's but im still a newb to the superduty's.

The steering wheel will only fit one way so you can't "spin" it.

By lifting the suspension you have effectively "shortened" the drag-link by increasing the distance(vertical)from the pitman arm to the tie rod. That is why your SW is turned a bit.

Again, SIMPLY loosen the lock nuts on the drag-link coupler and adjust the SW right there. Mine was off about 30* when I did my leveling kit and I brought it right back up straight in about 5 minutes!

Re: Tuff Country 2.5 leveling kit. INSTALLED !!!

The ratchet strap will not pull the axle over to re-attach the trac bar. I tried this on my old 01 and broke a brand new strap. I installed a Fabtech shackle kit with Fabtech's adjustable trac bar on a 01 F-350. I recommend an adjustable trac bar. DO NOT DRIVE YOUR TRUCK WITHOUT THE TRAC BAR INSTALLED AND TIGHT!!

whitjo is correct. The steering wheel is off due to the increase in distance from the pitman arm to the tie rod. When you lifted the truck it increased this distance which causes the tires to point to the left(when the steering wheel is straight). All you need to do is loosen the two sides of the drag link coupler and turn it until the steering wheel is straight and the tires are straight. You can do this in your driveway and should take you less than ten minutes.

Still get your truck aligned, but don't waste money having someone straighten your steering wheel.
