I got a friend that just bought a used 05 PSD CC KingRanch FX4 with 27K miles for 30K. I know its still under warranty but she asked me about why her AC doesn't blow out the normal vents, it just blows out the defroster vents, she also mentioned (after I asked her) that to get the 4x4 working they had to manually lock the hubs, her hubs have the auto feature like mine. Is the vacuum pump for the hubs the same one for the AC vents? Could there just be a fuse somewhere that could fix this? She doesn't really want to leave it at the dealer if its something she can do easily at home. If you guys have any experience with this and can tell me anything about it I'd really appreciate it. I don't think the truck has been chipped or anything.

First thing is look in owners manual for proper fuse location for the vacuum pump and check that fuse. On my 2000 it is fuse position #28 bu I do not know if it is the same location on an 2005 KR.

I mentioned that she should get that book out and look at it.

Your friend's truck has a vacuum leak somewhere. The AC system is designed so that if there is a leak, the air flow defaults to the defroster vents, as a safety measure. The vacuum leak also explans why the ESOF system isn't working. The ESOF system provides many opportunities for leaks, especially around the hub o-rings. My solution was to replace the stock hubs with stronger, manual Warn hubs and strip out all of the related vacuum lines from the vacuum pump to the front hubs. Now my vacuum pump goes directly to the vacuum canister, and I never have any problems with air not coming out of the proper vents. With the manual hubs I can also shift down to low-low without actually being in 4-wheel drive, which I have found comes in handy. With the manual hubs I also know for sure when I'm in 4-wheel drive and when I'm not, and with the ESOF you don't really know.

I'll tell her monday about this info. So basically, the vacuum system is almost unchanged from 2000 to 2005. Is the pump tilll located over the right fenderwell?

Sure you do. You can always lock the ESOF hubs in manually. I like ESOF, it is the best of both worlds. Completely automatic when you want the convenience, or manual if you get a vacuum leak. These trucks take maintenance, like changing the oil/filter, transmission fluid filter, fuel filter, air filter, and greasing the front end. I can change an "O"ring or vacuum hose occasionally, or have the dealer do it, for the conveniece of SOF. In the meantime, if you have a failure, you just resort back to manual operation.

Yes, you can always lock in the ESOF hubs manually, but my point is that when you turn the ESOF switch to 4WD, you have no way of knowing whether the hubs actually lock. The "4WD" dash light just confirms the switch position, not that the hubs are locked. Worse, when you turn the switch back to 2WD, you have no way of knowing whether they actually unlock.

No, there are no lights or guages to tell you the hubs are locked in, but you can tell. If I just have to have to know for sure, such as just prior to going axle deep in mud, then I just lock them in manually. When I go back to 2wd, who cares if they don't unlock? They will in a few feet, or even a couple of miles. No biggy. At work we run the hubs locked in permanantly with no problems at all except a possible slight decrease in fuel consumption.
