Adding Overhead Console to 02 F350

I'm wondering if I can add an overhead console to my 02 F350 that doesn't currently have one. I know most car manufacturers have basically the same wiring harness for all models. Does anyone know it the wiring pigtail is up there just under the headliner? Has anyone else tried this?

Thanks, any info would be appreciated

As far as the wiring it is not there, however you can purchase the harness from ford. the end of the harness for cab clearance lights and overhead console is located inside passenger lower kick panel. The harness from ford attaches there and runs along the pilar and then above to headliner.

Probably not. Even though you can get the harness that goes from the kick panel to the overhead, unless the body harness matches the trim level of a truck that has an overhead, the wires won't be there.

My truck is an XL, and I was going to pick up the speed signal at that connector in the kick panel to use the speed volume feature on the 6-CD player I installed. Even though the connector was there, there was only 1 or 2 wires going to it (and not the one I needed.)

Before you get into the project, pull the kick panel and verify that all the wires are in the connector. I think it holds 8 or 10.

You can pick up the gray wire on either side of the dash for the radio speed signal, FYI. Start from here:

http://rides.webshots.com/photo/1046...30312918OxyTpz

As far as car manufacturers having the same main harness for all levels in a vehicle platform, that depends on the bean counters in charge at the time. Some directors believe it reduces inventory cost to have one harness, while other directors take the opposite approach.

In 2001 many of the XLT and Lariat vehicles shared the same harnesses and other features, and some XL and XTL shared the same XLT support systems, just not the final equipment. In latter years the approach was reduce copper costs so what was put in the truck was only what was needed. So it really depends.

You have to pull the kick panel and check it out.

I had gone through the process of installing an overhead computer in my 2001 XLT, which did have all the wires at the kick panel. I made my own harness up from the floor to the OH rather then use Ford's. But I installed Ford's outside Temp harness that went tot he radiator support and the sensor out there.

Over the years a few people have installed an OH console and computer in vehicle that did not have wires in the kick panel. You just have to get the wiring schematics and go though the expense of getting the harnesses, or a cheaper route is get what you need from salvage, or the cheapest but most work of splicing in your own wiring from the main harness. That's not so hard if you are very comfortable in working and building vehicle wiring.
