General QuestionsGeneral questions related to 1999-2007 Super Duty trucks. If it doesn't fit the other categories, post it here. Gas engine discussion that pertains to all models is allowed. Specific gas engine questions should use the Gas Engines forum.
How many CFM do you want it to run?
What are you inflating?
How high a PSI does it need to maintain in a tank or temporary use?
Constant duty cycle or 10 minutes once a week?
VIAIRE makes a variety of compressors, both hard-mount and removeable, some have 100% duty cycle, others not, some are dust-protected and suitable for outside mounting, others not.
If you just want a compressor to fill your kid's bike tires, get a 12vdc cig lighter plug-in model from Schucks.

Well, I can't see you needing more than a $40 compressor for what you are indicating you would use it for. Go to Pep Boys or Sears and get a little 150psi compressor, comes with a light, tire gauge, ball needle and air nozzles for inflating air mattressed and pool toys.
Your indicated uses don't call for anything more expensive than a Sears special.
If you want a higher-priced model, check out Viaire. With them, you just get the compressor, so you'd have to power it and run the air line to a disconnect to a chuck to get it to work for you. Average price would be in the area of $350 to do a good job of the plumbing and wiring.

Ditto, Viaire is a great brand name but for your use the Sears unit will do wonders

You will be better off with something like the Viair, Outback or similar. I like the Outback compressor. It is more purpose built for what most any truck owner would want it for. The Viair compressors were originally for the low rider crowd. It is also a completely sealed unit.

I need a small 12 volt air compressor for a farm truck, any suggestions? I want one that is pretty fast and gives at least 100 psi. Thanks.

"I want one that is pretty fast and gives at least 100 psi."
Going to be real hard to find a unit that will do that without a tank and not pay big $$$$$$$. Of course everybodys idea about pretty fast varies. Good luck in your search.
I agree,, usually you get either a high volume low pressure or a low volume high pressure set up,, unless you get an EXPENSIVE engine driven compressor such as a York. Unless you are running air accessories on your truck,, ie. air bags, air horns, Ranch 9000 shocks et.,, just buy a portable unit like one listed above. I searched the internet extensively for bargain prices on my set-up, but still paid a bunch IMO.
Viaiar 380c: $140+shipping
3 gal alum tank: $50+shipping
Butt load of 8ga wire: $30
Guage,Relay, switches,
wire connectors,
shrink tubing, tape
14ga wire, grommets,
stainless bolts, nuts,
rubber washers,
circuit breaker,
air hose, plugs, bushings
tire inflator, air chuk,
pressure switch.wire loom,
wire clamps, more screws,
band-aids.
$ ???
TIME TO INSTALL = 8 hours and counting,, I'm also installing horns ($100) and controls to my air bags (More $$$), as well as re-wiring ALL of my electrical accesories to a new fuse panel under the hood. All of which is more time/money.
It's worth it for me and what I use my truck for but if you just want to fill up tires/toys and stuff,, save tourself alot of time/money/hassle and get a portable unit.
On edit: After all of this,, I still went out and bought a Coleman 12v raft inflator,, we have some pretty big water toys and this thing ($25) fills them up in seconds.
Brian
I installed an Oasis 1000 in a 5" front bumper winch extension. This comp will drive air tools without a tank. It will fill a 35" tire from 20lb to 70lb in 90 seconds. For tractor tires you will need that kind of performance. It cost $1K for the comp and 300 for the winch bumper extension.

Well,, I ALMOST finished last night!!! Compressor is running,, foot switch for air horn activation is firing,, all is good EXCEPT,, I bought 1/2 plugs for the tank instead of 3/8 grrrrrr. Parts store was closed by the time i realized it. Today after work,, "it's annoy the neighbors time". Kinda funny, all the guys in the neighborhood keep dropping by and asking,, "they done yet, I wanna hear 'em?"
