I lost a wheel bearing assembly on the freeway a couple weeks ago, and have been doing the work when I can to fix it. Initially I was just going to replace both assemblies at once so I ordered the timken ones, once I had the truck taken apart I realized there was going to be quite a bit more work involved, I got the seals, dust, knuckle, and inner, the seal driver for the knuckle seals, and went ahead and did my ball joints which I just got pressed into the new knuckles, as well as brakes and rotors. when I lost the assembly it heated up and melted the seal and thrust washer all over the bearing surface of the axle stub.
Here is a picture of the stub once I cleaned it up, there is one small gouge, although it looks more like pitting, on the bearing surface, it might be about 1/32 of an inch deep in the picture it is the dull area right by my thumb nail.
I'm certainly no mechanic and frankly have no idea if this is the type of damage I've been reading about where these need to be replaced, obviously I'm in this repair a lot of money (around a grand) and don't have a ton of expendable income but I do want it fixed right, so I don't have to worry about doing all this work again, does this stub look like it needs to be replaced?
