When I start up the truck, the backup sensor is in its operational mode. But as soon as I put it in gear (reverse or forward) the backup sensor light goes to "Off."
Anybody else have this?

Mine does the same thing. It quit back in January and I really didn't miss the constant beeping in reverse (because the sensors get covered with snow). I remember reading another post on here where someone said that it means there is a problem with the system somewhere. It could be a bad sensor, looses wire, or something similar causing it to set the off light as an error code. I guess that I'd check all the wires on the sensors to see if any were loose after that it would be going to the dealer. I think that mine is just a loose wire somewhere because after it warmed up it worked for a day or two and then quit again. Probably had ice built up under the bumper that pulled a wire loose. I'm not going to fix mine because it becomes very annoying while plowing or backing up trailers. If ford was smart they would have made the system disable untill the button was pushed again instead of resetting every time you shift into reverse.

Ford did do this to later model year trucks. If you have a good dealer, they can do it for you on your truck. They have to hook up the NGS and make the change, from what I've read, it takes less than 5 minutes. You can search the archives and find the info on this.

What exactly is a NGS? Is it the same thing as a Snap-On code scanner? What options does it allow you to change? I would imagine that's how you reprogram the speedometer for larger wheels as well? Thanks for the info about reprogramming it, didn't know that they could do that.

If the RSS system goes to 'OFF' then there is a problem in the system and it is going into a default mode and telling you its not working (better than finding out some other way! ). Get your dealer to reprogram the system so if you shut the sensors off they will remain off for the entire key cycle --> they should have come like this from the factory.
