Broken lugs

I had 3 lugs sheer off the other night while running 80 down the interstate. After spending the night outside Napa in the middle of nowhere I got it back on the road the next morning.

I suspected the lug nugs had worn threads and were not holding after a few years of abuse. I started replacing the lugnuts on the other side tonight and broke a wheel stud while using a torque wrench set at 150lbs. I'm wonding if I should replace them all on the front now.

Re: Broken lugs

My mechanic friend tells me to only replace them when they have to be replaced. But I think I'd be concerned about stretching the studs, especially with them carrying more of the weight. If it were me, I would err on the side of caution and go ahead and replace the whole set.

I second that. Better to be safe now than sorry later.

Re: Broken lugs

Going to replace them all tomorrow, might even back the torque off to 150 lbs.

Re: Broken lugs

The studs and lug nuts are not suppose to carry the weight of the truck the hub should with the correct wheel.
The lugs are only to hold the wheel on flat and sandwich the brake rotor inbetween.

Re: Broken lugs

The problem typically when I hear this is that you're using closed end lug nuts with the acorn style seat.
Often the nuts are too short and don't "quite" seat. They are torqued to spec, they bottom out on the stud and don't seat all the way. The wheel is essentially "loose". usually one or more is tight, but that still makes for flex and fatiguing of the studs. Then a few fall off.

Make sure your nuts are deep enough, or open-ended (like stock)

Hope that's your problem.

Re: Broken lugs

I had the longer style nuts before, and they worked fine. The shorter style still seem to have enough threads too.

Re: Broken lugs

Even when using the short lug nuts, I have seen it just pop the cover off the end of the nut.

Since I haven't looked yet, are they tough to replace? When I did my brakes a couple were in rough shape...

Thanks!
