California Registration/Smog Question

I'm a newbie here so I hope that I am posting in the correct forum. I also tried searching the forums, but no luck.

I am a CA resident and recently bought a 2000 F350 7.3 Manual Trans 4x4 DRW Crew Cab Long Bed out of Texas. This is a bit of hindsight on my part but am I going to have any problems registering it in CA? What should I expect?

Thanks,
Mike

Re: California Registration/Smog Question

I bought mine in Oregon and just registered it in CA. The just checked the VIN #'s. You will need to have a weight certificate in order to register it. The weight fees are bracketed you can find the on the DMV website), so the more your truck weighs, the more you pay. I got mine in the under 7k lb catagory (which is the lowest you'll be able to get) by running darn near empty on fuel, removed the spare and tailgate and me out of it. Just made it. Saved $60 a year by doing it.

Thanks, that’s encouraging. I noticed that there is no catalitic converter on mine, is that normal?

Every single truck we build, gas OR Diesel get a cat. converter. if it's gone, get one. Especially with CA having such strict emission requirements they will probably check to make sure you have one.

Re: California Registration/Smog Question

Wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I bought mine brand new in 2002 from the dealer in Napa, California. It did NOT come with a CAT. Yes, it was built at the Kentucky Truck Plant.

Let me rephrase. To the best of my knowledge all trucks have a kitty. I don't know how much people know or don't know. But FYI if your truck has a BIG round thing inline with the exhaust just behind the tranny crossmember on the passenger side then that is the kitty. The guy next to me puts them on every truck.

Re: California Registration/Smog Question

The trucks that you are currently building seem to have both the 6.0 motor and a CAT. So far everyone who has chimed in on this thread has a 7.3 motor, except you, maybe that is the reason why none of us have CAT's.

All I know is mine came stock with no CAT.

Keep building 'em!!!

Take care,

-Mike

Wrong. I dont know if there is a difference between manual and auto but the 2000 auto does not come with a cat.

Re: California Registration/Smog Question

No cat. No problem with reg. The inspector asked me to pop the hood. I asked him why. He said to look at the emissions system. I said it was a diesel. He said pop it anyway. I guess he looked so as to not to appear stupid!
