For the last month or so the air conditioning in my F350 is on full time and I can't turn it off. It doesn't matter whether the switch is set to A/C or vent, the air coming from the defrost/floor/dash vents is cold - I mean A/C cold - and the only way to warm it up is to adjust the temperature control.
Has anyone else seen this? Any suggestions as to how to solve the problem?
as a temporary solution, unplug the compressor clutch. I wired in a switch on mine from the dash because here in washington state, running the air is a waste of fuel most of the time. I use it to defrost the windows until the truck warms up then I just shut it off. Hopefully I'm beating the planned obsollesence routine that way.

When I turn the switch to the off position the fan stops blowing but I cannot tell if the A/C pump is still active or not. I agree that it is most likely a bad relay, I'm just surprised that the system would fail to an 'on' state instead of an 'off' state.
This could be quite job to troubleshoot so I was hoping that one or more of the TDS members would have already experienced this issue and could provide a leg-up for the job.

I have run just over 100,000 miles in my truck and notice 0 difference in MPG with AC on or off.
With the power of the PSD and the efficiency of Modern AC Compressors you may see saves in the 1/10's of MPG. But I have not seen any change.

You do know that the AC compressor will run in every position except vent and floor, right? Are you getting AC air out of these 2 positions also?

No, I didn't know that, I would expect the A/C compressor to run only in the A/C or Max A/C positions. I get A/C out of every position except Off, and I can't be sure that the A/C compressor is not running in the Off postion because no air flows through the vents at that point.
My concern is two-fold:
1. I generally like to drive with the vents providing ambient temp airflow from the outside, but with the A/C running all of the time the air coming in is too cold.
2. If the A/C compressor is running constantly, it is bound to fail prematurely and it can't be cheap to replace.
Although I've only had the truck since June, I don't remember the vent air coming out cold unless the switch was set to A/C or Max A/C.

Roger is right, i was told on my 99 that the ac is always on to keep mold from builing. i thought my thermostat was busted and took it in, thats how i found out about the vent and floor being the only ones that didnt have the ac on all the time.
check to see what your interior temp is set at. my new truck adjusts the temp even w/o ac on, by what i have the interior set to.
