Check your tires and air pressure

Hey everyone, this is just a quick reminder for everyone check the tires on their trucks. I had both dual tires on one side of the truck blow-out at the same time, on a single axle truck at that. Talk about a wild ride, having two tires blow at the same time while going 70 mph was very scary and un-nerving. Soon as they blew the truck went sideways and almost rolled over, it took everything I could do to get the truck straight and keep it straight and slow it down. As soon as I got off work I carefully checked all of the tires and air pressure in my pick-up.

I just wanted to remind everyone to check their air pressure...I don't want anyone to have a ride like I did today.

If those tires were mounted on stock dually wheels, that's your problem. The tires rubbed between the duals, and the result was predictable.

The widest safe tires for '99-'04 stock 16" dually wheels is LT235/85R16.

Predictable, yes it is. Years ago I had to use a Ford 9000 to haul some construction job equipment back to Alabama from Texas when our regular company driver got sick and couldn't drive. I wasn't paying attention to some low tires on the back axle of the trailer. Of course now I know that the friction of the tires rubbing together, probably one of more was flat, on the sidewalls was what caused the FIRE. Had a heck of a blaze going for a while. Big expensive repair. Ever since then I watch my tires on all my equipment more closely, especially for big rocks stuck in between duals and flats or low tires.

Re: Check your tires and air pressure

I'm sorry, I didn't explain the situation correctly. The blow-out happened on my work truck, a GMC Topkick, with the manufacture recommended tires. Those BFG's are on my personal pick-up truck, I would never think of running those tires on a dually. When I loaded the truck I did check to make sure the tires weren't rubbing and they were ok, I wasn't even close to the wieght rating on the tires.
