Could It Be A Bearing?

I have a 2006 F250, 4x4, with the diesel. It only has 13,000 miles on it. However it is past its three year birthday, so I guess I am out of warranty. I took a 6 hour roundtrip yesterday, at 75MPH highway speeds. About 2 hours in, my ABS light went on. Brakes were functioning normally, and the light did not come on after sitting. On the 3 hour leg home, it came on again, and when I got home, I smelled burning plastic. My driver side front wheel was very hot, and smoking. Did I say it had 13,000 miles? So, does that sound like a bad bearing? If so, does that mean I need to replace the whole hub assembly? Do you think Ford would cover this despite my being beyond three years since nobody should have a potentially wheel-losing, crash-causing defect like this with only 13,000 miles on their vehicle. What really spooks me is that I had my son in the truck and his 13 year old friend. Scary to think what could have happened.

Sounds like a brakes issue to me - is the truck pulling to the left? If you have alot of black dust on the wheels, it is hot and it smells funny I suspect dragging brakes.

Go to Ford and ask NICELY for help! Your choice but I wouldn't place drama to the scene as it is each our our responsibility to know the vehicles we drive are safe. If the ABS light came on and you continued to drive it you made the dafety choice not Ford. I would have done the same thing - but I wouldn't try to hold Ford accountable for my decision - after all they put the warning light in and it worked!

Go talk to a service manager and ask for input on the probelem and then ask if due to the very low miles would the be willing to work with you on the warranty. If you keep him in a good mood and put him in a possition to help a 'friend' he can.

It could be bearings but you'd be hearing a noise - and chances are you'd have to go real far on a very obviously bad bearing to have catastrophic failure. Ford wouldn't be responsible for that action.

Good luck

I would also suspect the brakes.Since it was very hot i would check the caliper it could be the slide pins are stuck causing it to drag.
