Exterior mirror mount

Hi all, a couple weeks ago i was backing my truck up at night and broke my passenger side mirror off of the door. The aluminum triangle peice (don't know what else to call it) that the plastic mirror sits on is broke in a couple spots as well. I just got off the phone with the dealership and they said i need to buy a new door, is that true? When i was looking at it, i pulled a couple grommets out on the inside of the door (when the door was open) and found some nuts that i could get at with a socket and assumed that was how the aluminum triangle piece was held on to the door. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

there should be 4 grommets with nuts in there when you take them off. if you remove the nuts you should be able to take off any remnants of the mirror. then slap on a new one. (Advance auto can get them much cheaper than the stealership) if the nuts got ripped right out of the door, and you can not mount the new nuts in that location, then you will need a new door.

Thanks, that's what i thought. So the new mirrors should come with the aluminum piece that actually bolts into the door? I'm going to try it in the next few days and post my results.

yes, mine came with it. it was attached to the mirror, and had the studs coming off to be mounted into the door.

When you buy a mirror it is a direct bolt on.Like BLOWINSMOKE said unless the nuts ripped through the door you will have no problems, even if they did there's ways around replacing the door. But I doubt that's the case.I work at a collision center and even w/ mirrors ripped off from accidents they never rip through the door, the studs usually break off first.Good luck.

I just did the same thing today. None of the black plastic broke and it all functions well (folds in and out and retracts and extends. My problems are the motors that move the mirror dont work. the only side that works is to move the mirror down. the mirror glass and the plastic were popped off the center nut and guide pins so it was hanging by the motor boots. Is there a way to take apart the mirror and get new motors?

OE Ford mirrors are cheaper than advanced at least here. Adv wanted 226 each for my truck and were exactly as OEM, new from Ford were 167 and 176 apiece(L&R) and they have a new feature, they will rotate forward as well as backward without destroying the door. They are also the elec. telescoping version and I am working on setting up switching to use this option. I had electrically operated mirror heads.
P.S. the new ones also have adjustable spot mirrors unlike the fixed OE units from stock.
