I have an opportunity to buy a very nice low mileage 2004 F450 Lariat for pretty good price. Is there a disadvantage to owning this size truck vs an F350? Keep in mind my current truck does everything I need, this F450 truck falls into the "want" category.
You would have to look into the registration prices in your area. But, the gvwr on the 450 may cost you more. Also, what gearing does the 450 come with? It may cost you more on the fuel side.

Check with your insurance company to see if they will cover the truck reasonably or consider it a commercial truck and not insure it.

Stock and doing fine. Coolant filter, Fuel regulator upgrade.
Ride will also be stiffer....gearing may be lower so rpm higher...which would work better towing.

I don't know if this applies to the 04's, but I know the 05 and later F450's had a better turning radius than the F350's. This was a result of a wider front track width and suspension design, that allowed the front wheels to turn sharper (larger cramp angle). This may apply to the 04's too, but I'm not sure. I have a detailed file that will tell me, but I'd have to find it.
Also, a F350 with a standard truck bed would have a plastic tank mounted on the driver's side frame in front of the axle. An F450 should have a metal tank behind the rear axle, and Ford had a experienced a high failure rate with those as the interior lining came loose causing all kinds of problems. But the after-market offers more permanent solutions to those short comings.
Also, as was already stated, the F450 will likely have a lower speed ring and pinion ratio, which could hurt efficiency if you're not towing a heavy load.
I live in california and just bought a new 2012 F450 (sold my 11 250). My insurance is actually a few bucks cheaper with the 450 than my 250. I can tell you from driving the 450, I will never go back. This thing turns better than any truck I have driven. My concerns around rpms and mileage turned out to be minimal. The gearing is awesome for towing my 17k 5th wheel and it handles the mountains here with ease. At 65mph towing my rpms are at 2k so definitely revs higher than the 3.55 gears but is not as much of a difference as I thought it would be when not towing. Love this truck.
