The FOG .......................lights

can anyone direct me to a schematic on how i might wire the fog lights to acctivate w/o having to run the head lights as well in other words i want to be able to have control of them as a separate system........does that make sense to you guys
by the way its on an 01 Excursion v-10 and the fogs activate when you pull out the light switch

Re: The FOG .......................lights

Select Parking Lights and pull out the fog light switch. Your fogs will be on and your headlights will be off. Works every time on both my 2003 and 2005 X.

He is asking about being able to turn them on no matter what postion his headlight switch is in. Do a search there is at least one thread that details how to mod your light switch.

Re: The FOG .......................lights

I think he's right, somewhat. If you're vehicle is equipped with daytime running lights they are required to be on in order to operate the vehicle in some states. However what cop will know which vehicle will have what light funtion on each model.

There are alot of links to how to do this, just look for them. Also, the 2005 that RoyC has is setup differently then Toorglide's 01. If I come across it sometime tonight I'll post the link.

Re: The FOG .......................lights

It is only illegal to drive at night with only the fog lights on. I know this because I am member of the law enforcement community in South West Georgia. While driving at night you are required to use the vehicles headlights.

That DOES NOT work in my 02, although I wish it did.

I think what the original poster is referring to is the Steve Racer mod.

PM me and I can supply you with a link to another site.

Re: The FOG .......................lights

This should not be illegal in areas with heavy fog, or when driving in the clouds. I lived near Lake Arrowhead in CA. and many times while driving up the mountain you would get dense fog or clouds and the only way to see was to turn your headlights off and use a yellow or amber fog light. Usually a "fog train" would form with the guy in front having the fog lights and everyone else about 10 feet of the bumper of the guy in front of them. Dangerous yes, many times the guy in the front would crash and the others would simply pile up one by one! I lived up there for quite a few years and it was by far the most dangerous driving I have ever done. I had one of those million watt handheld lights that I would aim out the window just trying to see the lines on the road. Your headlights are useless in weather like this, it is like shining them into a mirror!!!

Re: The FOG .......................lights

I didnt think we had FOG lights, they are usually amber in color. We have "Driving Lights" and I cant imagine they are ileagal to run with now that most of the cars come from the factory with them!
And they are on when the headlights are on...(Low beam anyway.)

Re: The FOG .......................lights

These are on the vehicle for show, not go, as are most.

A true fog light can be either color, but some studies indicate that yellow light has less tendency to reflect back to the drivers eyes off the fog. A proper fog light has a very sharp cutoff, with no splay upwards higher then where it is mounted, which should be no higher then 12-16" off the ground. At 12-16", the light is under the fog cover, not in it. Our normal mounting location does not meet this requirement.

Most of the lights sold as fog lights do not meet this criteria, even some of the well known brands like Hella. Some of the older Hella's that were designated FF did have a very sharp cutoff, and some of the newer ones do too. But in general terms, you have to pay a good amount of money to achieve this goal. If I was going to buy a set today with the express intent of fog running, I would expect to lay out over $100 - $130 minimum. So you have to figure if you want show or go.
