This speed control thing, is it only a problem if you use the speed control, or can it be a problem at anytime?
It can happen any time!!!! My uncle's truck caught fire in the middle of the night and set his whole house on fire. Ford bought him a new truck and house, but it can happen any time.
I talked with some guys in our shop, I work at International, and the basics are that it is a sensor that is always on and occasionally brake fluid will leak on to it, shorts and catches the brake fluid on fire and then the whole truck and then what ever may be around the truck. Just got my recall letter for this last week and will be in the shop this weekend.
This is one recall I would not skimp on, yes you may be replacing a fuse down the road......but a HELL of lot better than ohhh lets say a truck! or a house!
As far as the CPS, if your truck isn't randomly shutting down then I wouldn't replace it. Mine was, never fun on the highway, so I took it in when I got the letter and its been about 3months with no issues except for the 1-3mpg that disappered.

Got my invite today....I don't really trust the dealers in my area, but I guess I will call and play the "it's my only vehicle" card so they will not keep my baby.

Does anyone know if this is related to my seemingly temperature/bump related intermittent Speed Control operation.
It doesn't seem to like cold weather, and sometimes a good jolt from the road will kick it off.
It might be....a quick way to tell is to look at the sensor and see if its covered in brake fluid. If not its somewhere else in the speed control system.

No, you can have a problem if the battery is connected. It doesn't matter if you use anything on the truck or not, if the truck has power with the key on OR key off it can start a fire.
That's true for gassers, but not for 99-01 diesels (I'm not sure on the 02 and later diesels, because I haven't checked the wiring diagram). On the gassers, the master cylinder mounted cruise cutout switch circuit is hot at all times, but on the 99-01 diesels, it's only hot with key on. I suppose that it might short with the key on and start a fire that grows after you pull into the driveway/garage and shut it off. But that's an unlikely thing, IMO.
A fire going down the road could be pretty disastrous, though.
Does anyone know exactly where this switch is? Pictures? Thanks.

Hey Guys, first part of Oct I went down to Ford to check if there was a recall on my 94 Bounder for this exact problem. On a trip back from the lake my unit kept jumpimg in and out of overdrive. They checked my vin # and told me that there was no problem. You guessed it, today I get the recall.
...brake fluid will leak on to it, shorts and catches the brake fluid on fire...
I used to think this was the issue too until someone else on the forum stated that brake fluid doesn't burn. I don't know what temperature it would take to burn the fluid, maybe an electrical short is hot enough to make it burn, but it will not burn by applying a flame to it. I tried. It must be the wiring insulation in the wire harness that is burning due to the short.
Your right ,when you make an appointment with DMV you go to the front of the line. most of the time The service writer can install the harness that goes in. I'm just saying its that easy to do, I don't want to step on any toes about chain of command.

Ya, I'm pretty sure an untrained monkey could put it in as well......and I might actually be OK with that.......if my other option was the service writer I had.

Has anyone experienced a drop in MPG since having the Cam Position Sensor replaced? I am happy with my mileage for once, and do not want this recall to change that.

For anyone still debating the recall for the cruise control......
below is an image(or link, I stink at posting images) of the fix. I just got back from the stealer, 15mins in and out. Looks like they added a harness with two fuses, on at each end. I will do some rerouting later, I don't like how the mechanic did it.

I asked them not to install it but just give it to me as a back-up for " just in case ". They did and they got to collect their money from FMC for the recall. I've heard some people have had a drop in MPG and some have not.

I just had both recalls preformed at the local Ford fleet center that my company uses to service our fleet. They completed the recalls in 15 minutes and did not change the cps per my request (wrote it up as having the new replacement). The main Ford dealer indicated that I had no choice in the matter that the new cps would be installed, and the appointment would take three hours. What a difference in customer service between two facilities owned by the same company.
