Re: Front Wheel Bearings ...bad??

How about this noise: It's a medium to high pitch "woooooo" sound. It's coming from the left front wheel, only under braking/weight transfer. It doesn't do it all the time. It sounds like a noise that would be made by a part that is turning.. so I'm guessing it might be the hub? Is that easy to replace by yourself?

Re: Front Wheel Bearings ...bad??

Mine was making the same noise at around 30 to 40 mph and there was some play in the front tire/hub so I had it replaced at 135K.
I kept the old hub and the needle bearing had plenty of grease on it and I still have the noise, just not as loud.
I have not checked to see if there still is any play.

Re: Front Wheel Bearings ...bad??

Jack up the wheel and rotate it. If there is any noise or roughness check the wheel / tyre assembly for play, rock up and down. Any play or noise/roughness you have become a member of the stuffed hub brigade. It needs replacement. Not a big job.Information can be found on this site as to the proceedure. The engineering on the hub unit leaves a LOT LOT LOT to be desired.
Regards
Ron

Re: Front Wheel Bearings ...bad??

Thumping when moving, or a shake when braking that comes and goes, is a good indicator of a bad bearing. Ask me I know, just found out about it this weekend. And here I thought it was a bad rotor!

Re: Front Wheel Bearings ...bad??

If the bearing gets real bad the ABS light will show as the chopper wheel removes the end of the sensor.Hence ford supply one[sensor]with the new hub

Re: Front Wheel Bearings ...bad??

Bearings are sealed and pressed into the hub. The parts are supposedly sitting at my door according to the fed ex website. Thats pretty good turn around, I ordered them after 3 on Wednesday. I had to get replacement rotors since I am upgraading to post 3/22/99 hubs, so total with shipping came to just under $600.

The whole hub has to be replaced. It's a unitized assembly that's not serviceable. Some guys have investigated bearing swaps, but it's not worth trying, I think is the consensus.

Swapping the whole hub assembly is actually easier than replacing & repacking bearings IMO, except the parts cost more. The shop guys love the unitized hub/bearing assembly.

Re: Front Wheel Bearings ...bad??

Just had my machanic replace the inner hub bearing and told me that there was a service bulliten out to replace the needle bearing. The old one was to small ?? The newer one a little larger and said that some type of blue grease was specific to that bearing assembly c6tz-3123-a $21.60, the old bearing was dust and no bearings, thanks to my old machanic i will not be seeing him again... hope this helps..

Re: Front Wheel Bearings ...bad??

What is funny is the inner bearing for the axle was in perfect shape. The hub though rubbed against the axle seal, but thankfully didnt tear it up, I didnt need to pull the axle and replace it. Now to find some bolts to put the Warn hub back on, and have a spare set so I can do the passenger side now. It doesnt seem to need it, but I have it and it would be a good idea to do it since I already have the parts and it isnt a good idea to have one new rotor and one old rotor on the front.
