Question Fuel Gauge not Working?

The fuel gauge on my 2003 just quit working... Now it shows full all the time. I had just driven on a short trail with some small saplings growing up, so I looked underneath for any wires hanging down that could have been snagged and pulled apart by a sapling, but nothing. All the wires are tucked up high out of the way and appear to be hooked up properly.

Mine did that but it stuck on empty. I ran the truck almost dry and when I filled it up the float was stuck. I went over a few speed bumps and the float came loose and read the proper fuel level.

I wonder if something like that happened to yours. The fuel may have sloshed up and bound the float up. I think it will come down if you give it some time and maybe a good bumpy road when the tank is less than full.

Happened to me a few times after filling up at a new station, but it stuck on empty. Stopped filling at that station and it hasn't done it since.

Thanks lonestar. I had been wondering if it could be a stuck float. I have refueled once and it didn't change anything, but it sounds like it would be worthwhile trying the rubber mallet.

Well, I tried banging the tank with a rubber mallet, but that didn't solve it, so the other day I finally got around to dropping the tank.

Long story short, that didn't solve it. With the tank on the ground I unplugged the sending unit, but that made no effect (gauge still showed empty with key off and right full with key on). I then ran a wire between the two terminals on the plug, also with no effect.

So that leaves the wiring or the gauge itself. Any ideas how to figure out which it is?

do the "harpoon" mod - will likely solve your problem (did mine)
