funny shifting and RPM?

So just before xmas my f350 stated to seem to want to be in the wong gear and seemed to be lugging just a little, then in a smooth flat road in town it downshifted all by its self and seemed to do it a few more time, very smooth down shift but seemed to be in too low a gear when it did it.
I have a 5 position DP tuner in and when i selected the stock setting it "seems" to have go away.. but its such a dog in stock mode its hard to tell. I usualy run the 80hp econo tune around town with no load.

That said i was thinking about getting a autoenginuity scanner and wounderd where was the best place to get one and someone said i would need the FORD upgrade to scan the truck.

My 2 questions are... is the the chip on the way our or perhaps the trans? and where is the best place to get a autoenginuity from and what one would be best to get. I want to hook it to my laptop.

Thanks as always in advance,

Dave
