Gas in Diesel tank

My buddy filled up yesterday in his 6.0 and there must have been gasoline in the diesel tanks. He filled up about 24 gallons. Truck started sputtering etc....

He made it home then siphoned out all the fuel. It smelled like gasoline.

Besides changing out the fuel filters and topping off with fresh diesel what should he do?

Re: Gas in Diesel tank

Where do you siphon 24 gal of gas to? Maybe we don't want to know...

Run some Staydine in every tank for a while and he might be OK. The injectors will be the first thing to go if there are any problems.

Re: Gas in Diesel tank

The gas can be used in 2 cycle stuff like chain saws & power trimmers. Might be able to use it in an old lawn mower. Does he have reciepts? Was the pump marked diesel? If so he should be able to re-coup the cost of the fuel, and may save a few others from the same mistake.

If he used the wrong pump, oh well - its only money.

Re: Gas in Diesel tank

This is why I keep all my receipts when buying diesel and pay with a credit card - there's no question when I was there and what I bought.

Also proves you paid for the fuel if you get stopped for doing a drive off. Don't ask

Re: Gas in Diesel tank

I'm the one it happened to last Tuesday on the north fork of long island. I haven't been able to get on the net since.

The pump was marked diesel and the gas jockey filled it. I got a reecipt. Apparently someone either dumped gasoline into the diesel tank in the ground or the delivery truck was filled improperly.

He put 24 gallons of gasoline (presumably mixed with diesel) into my tank which already had 14 gallones of diesel. So I figure I had a roughly 3:2 mixture. Thank God it wasn't 36 gallons of straight gasoline.

I first noticed a rev in the engine when the torkshift shifted very soon afterwards. Then some hefty romping at low idle and coming off a stop. Thought I got a bad batch of diesel and figured changing my fuel filters would be required.

Drove appox 100 miles back home before I knew it was gas. Cracked the water seperator on the HFCM and immediately smelled the gas.

Pumped out the tank into jerry cans and have been burning it off mixing it gradually with the gas in my other 2 suv's. A friend took 15 gallons to do same.

Filled a 5 gal jerry can in town with diesel to get the truck there from my place. Was smoking like crazy on the way. Then filled up top to total 37.2 gallons so figured I got most of it out. Put in 2 qts of marvel mystery oil in with the fuel.

So far have driven it about 75 miles and all is fine. I jumped on it a few times from a dead stop to see if I could break it. Heck if the engine is going to break I'd like it to happen now.

The gas station owner said to send him the bill and he'll make good. Fuel, filters, marvel mystery oil = $200 (Diesel is $3.54 a gallon here).

I remembered reading about this happening to someone else and that's what tey did. They also advised not to bring it to the dealer which I think is really good advice.

This was the first time that I did not pump my own fuel. In a way I'm lucky that the attendant did. The reciept specifies which pump # and diesel. So it's irrefutable. From now on I do a sniff test when I start pumping diesel into my truck .

Cant take anything for granted anymore.

Re: Gas in Diesel tank

and folks thought I was crazy for always sniffign the nozzle when filling up. I think you are taking this quite well. I wonder what the station will do with 5000 gallons of unsellable diesel? you might want to publish the station name so you local bretheren can avoide it for a while until he sells off all that bad fuel to tourists...

" I wonder what the station will do with 5000 gallons of unsellable diesel?" They can sell It back to a refinery as Transmix & start the process all over again, to refine it back into gas & diesel.Trust me it will not go to waste.
