heart set on 7.3, now debating 6.0

hey guys, new to the forum here...lurking a while...i am about to buy my first diesel (want older used/cant spend 50k or more for something new!) and have been told by a good buddy to try to get a 02/03 7.3liter and to stay away from 6.0s...ive read a lot of horror stories about the 6.0s and its scared me from them...problem is its hard to find a 7.3 for sale with the mileage im lookin for (under 120k)...i know there are some 6.0s out there that havent had troubles, but ive heard if they havent had trouble yet, they will one day...ive found a 2004 king ranch with 86k miles, 6.0l engine, never had any work done besides regular oil/maintenance and tire rotations...all done at ford dealership...has papers to prove it...used mostly for hauling barrel racing horse to rodeos...should i look into purchasing this truck or wait for a 7.3?

is it true most all 6.0s will eventually have some sort of problem? my good buddy has an oilfield business with a dozen 6.0s "blown up" he says...i know they work them hard nonstop, but still scares me from them

My opinion - keep looking for a 7.3 that you like until you find one. While some have been OK with dealing with the 6.0, I have been more than satisfied with the 7.3. 120,000 miles is not a lot for a diesel engine. Just keep in mind with thsoe miles other parts of the truck (brakes, tires suspension, etc) may need to be addressed.

yes I would definitely keep looking for a 7.3 or if you cant find one try to get an 07 6.0 with low miles so at least you will have some warranty if you have issues with it. good luck in the search!
