How do I extend my Towing Mirrors?

Hi,

I have a late (07/99) '99 Super Duty with the dual-boom Towing mirrors. When I purchased it, the mirrors were in what appears to be the fully extended position. I've tried pushing and pulling but can't seem to get them to budge. Officially, Ford says these mirrors were a 2000 and up option. My owner's manual is no help whatsoever.

Here are my REAL questions: 1)Did Ford make a version that did not extend and contract?
2)If they do move, is there a trick to it?

They sure look like they should slide in and out. There are "scallops" in them that look like the two parts should come together. I've noticed some people's mirrors have little reference marks on the booms to show how far in or out they are. Mine don't have these. They are power adjustable. I'm sure they are a Ford part.

Any insight would be helpful!

Thanks, Todd

Yes, they made a version that didn't extend & contract. Our company has a 250 whose mirrors don't extend.

Re: How do I extend my Towing Mirrors?

sounds like u just have the power mirrors and not the sliding tow mirrors. mine are a pain to move in and out but i don't mind because they stay put when they are where i want them. if u don't have marks and think they are all the way out i would say they are not the sliding ones.

Re: How do I extend my Towing Mirrors?

Yep, the change over was late 10-99. I had the non telescopic mirrors on my 2000 MY that was built 7-99. Later I upgraded them to the telescope mirrors with blinker, running lights & heat.

Re: How do I extend my Towing Mirrors?

I do believe that on the early 99's the lower convex portion was non-adjustable as well.

I've got 2000 model mirrors on mine. And the 2000 model front bumper & airbox. 2003 jeweled headlamps. 2001 Dana 60 front axle, hubs and rotors. 2000 cupholder, and the list goes on and on

Kinda like that Johnny Cash song I reckon, the one about the Cadillac made from parts he stole at work.

It's actually a late '99 but it does appear that the changeover on this mirror design gets blurry as the '99 calendar year came to a close. My truck also has the late '99-on-up airbox assembly. I've now talked to people who have late '99's with both sliding and non-sliding mirror heads. Even some 2000's that apparently don't slide!? To add more confusion, I now remember my Dad's '99 had mirror's that did slide. I think he had a Lariat or Eddie Bauer Special Edition model, so maybe that has something to do with it...

One thing I noticed is the lower section of the mirror does have the fixed convex lens, and because of the angle it's set to, I don't believe the boom could slide all the way in without interference.

I love the functionality of these mirrors, but I'm kind of tired of "white knuckling" it every time I take our store deposit through the commercial lane of the bank drive-through! I can't afford the price of upgrading at this time-other priorities you know.

DieselDeaf,
I upgraded my cupholder as well. My local Ford parts department practically had it sitting on the parts counter before I finished my sentence. I guess maybe they'd heard this one before?

Thanks for the input guys, Todd Noel

Re: How do I extend my Towing Mirrors?

My rig had trailer tow mirrors that did not extend/contract, and the lower convex was NOT adjustable. My build date is in my sig. I have since upgraded.

Re: How do I extend my Towing Mirrors?

If your mirrors telescope they will have small red triangular shaped arrow heads on the top of the lower strut that are visible all the time and inch markings that are visible when the mirrors are extended. Other than that there is no visual different between the telescoping and non-telescoping versions.

Re: How do I extend my Towing Mirrors?

I believe the change was in 2000 not late 99. My 2000 order was on hold because the extendable mirrors were not yet avalable in early 2000 and I had that box checked off.

As I stated before the change was Sept 99. I am not guessing, I remember missing the change by less than two months. My truck was built week of 7/24/99 it's a 2000 model year, one of the first off the line.
The workers must of had great vacations because my truck has been close to bullet proof.
