When you open a door, a little button sticks out of the door frame and turns on the interior lights. So to turn off the lights you can mash that button back in - or tape it so it can't stick out.

Several variations on that theme. If you want to fix it permanent for a door, then remove that button from the doorframe and hard-wire the button so the light cannot come on when the door is opened.

But prepare for unintended consequences. If you jummy the switch so the lights don't come on, you will also disable the "door ajar" light on the dash.

Aren't they on the time out circuit where the lights shut off after about 10 minutes?

My "02 isn't an Excursion so are we talking about the same thing or not? But my switches are built into the door latch in the door. They are also on a timer. They will only stay on for about 10 min. Easiest way I found was to take a phillips screw driver and make the latch close. You may try posting this in the Excursion forum and see if they know better.
