Re: Lug nut torque specs please??????

165 Ft/Lbs. Do not torque it down all at once. Break it up into several increments for a last tightening torque of 165 Ft/Lbs. Remember to use a star type pattern so the wheel will be tightened evenly. Apply a small amount of oil to the washer of the lug nut only to keep it free moving.

Re: Lug nut torque specs please??????

I was mailed a supplement that changed the torque to 165 footpounds.
Here's a little reading from the past.

Re: Lug nut torque specs please??????

I agree with bushwakd 165 ft/lbs I always have to refer to the manual for the first wheel to get the order right. The order is: "1-top, 2-bottom, 3-right, 4-left, 5-bottom right, 6-top left, 7-top right, 8-bottom left”.
I always get the first 4 right but get fuzzy on the last 4. I usually start with the 20 in/lb setting on my drill driver when putting the lugs back on, then 30 ft/lbs, 80 ft/lbs, 120 ft/lbs, and then 165 ft/lbs. I cringe every time I go to a tire shop and watch them just go in a circle around a wheel with the impact wrench.
I even asked the first time I got tires on my truck if the mechanic new the torque settings and tightening order. I should have watched. The week after I was taking the rear wheel off for something and 1 lug nut was finger tight and that got me curious so I got my torque wrench and checked the others, ranged between 30 ft/lbs and 80ft/lbs. Never went back there and I watched very closely the next time I got tires.

Re: Lug nut torque specs please??????

Is there a different setting for a 2000 dually??? I know I read to stop some of the wheel vibration to retorque the wheels to 140-150 ft lbs and it does seem to work. Please clarify this.

Re: Lug nut torque specs please??????

I thought I'd muddy the water a bit more and say that on the lugnut's washer (at least on my truck) it says "150 ft/lb".

Re: Lug nut torque specs please??????

Always check your owner's manual for the correct spec & procedure. I don't think you're supposed to put oil on them, but some anti-seize lubricant is OK.

Quoted from pg 167 of my 2003 Owners Guide: "On all two-piece flat wheel nuts, apply motor oil between the flat washer and the nut. Do not apply motor oil to the wheel nut threads or the wheel stud threads."

You are right, that is how many bolts are broken or deformed. With coarse threads one should multiply wet, lubricated, torque by a factor of .6 So if the threads were lubricated, wet, then the max torque would be 165# X .6 = or 99 lbs. If you lube them and then torque to 165# then that is 165 x 1.4 = the equivalent of 231 lbs, over-torqued could pop the stud. Might be useful information for someone that has a torque wrench that doesn't go to 165#. 106

Re: Lug nut torque specs please??????

Boy nothing is simple is it. To much or not enough torque and you can damage the rotors. Now throw in some never seize on the threads and your really out in space. Guess I'll clean mine off and leave them dry to be safe.
