2002 Super Duty. My message center would go out and then come on. Now it has been dark for a month. I searched the posts and read that there was a fix but can't seem to locate it. Thanks, T
That was my problem. I removed the foam to remove the screw holding the board. There were two of the flat tiny resistors that were loose. A little solder and I'm back in business. It is such an easy fix I don't know why the Ford manuals don't mention it. They say if the unit is not working and it has voltage replace it. Thanks, T

Same problem, mine goes out, then on, then dim. same year also. Did you do the repairs yourself? How hard to remove the outer console?

I did my own one of the hard parts is getting the cover off the console, It feels like its going to break just before the clips let go. also becareful not to drop the resistor if you plan to resolder instead of getting new.

It's interesting that your truck, and the OP's truck, supposedly had the upgraded new circuit board. I went ahead and replaced mine with a new updated board instead of resoldering the 5 loose resistors on it. But I was told when I bought the new circuit board that the upgraded circuit board came out during the late 2000 MY and into the 2001 MY. My truck was an early 2000 model.
Makes me wonder if it isn't the vibration that the diesel does that shakes the resistors loose, regardless of which board you have?
I also did the mod to keep my display bright, so that when I have my headlights on (I drive all the time with the headlights on, no DRL), the overhead display doesn't dim.
just my .02 cents worth

Do a search on the site. I clipped a wire on the passenger side footwell. I don't want to tell you the wrong wire, so it's better to do a search for the mod (to make sure the 04 is the same wire as the 2000), but it was the light blue with red/burgundy stripe wire. The side panel is easy to snap off and back on.
I don't think it is too bright at night. I like the fact that with my lights on during the daytime, I can still see the display, even in direct sunlight.
Clipping the wire doesn't alter anything else except the overhead display.

Took me longer to drive to father-in-laws house to borrow a soldering iron than it did to fix this. 5 mins start to finish and to think I left the thing not working for 2 months...
I had mine go out on my 01 PSD. Found a place on Ebay that rebuilds the whole thing for about $40, including shipping. Comes with lifetime warranty. I popped it out, shipped it to them and had it back in about 2 days, works great. Was a leak in the cab light that shorted it out and they were still able to ix it. Might be easier than trying to locate resistors.
Radio shack is a good place if you have one near by.
This is from the link in the second post:
"These resistors are not soldered in very well, and they are subject to enough heat that they weaken the solder joint and occasionally FALL OFF! If you find yours is missing the SMD resistor, or the resistor is laying in your tray, it is OK to re-use it. It is NOT DIRECTIONAL. If you lost your original, you can use a standard style resistor. The 680's are 68 ohms. I had to replace one as pictured."
I bought a complete new oem board for the piece of mind rather than trying to repair my board.
