The right rear wheel on my '03 was making a horrific grinding noise, so I took things apart and lo and behold... one of the spring clips that goes on the T-nail through the parking brake shoe was inside the little drum, slowly being mangled and ground to death. The T-nail is long gone out the back of the backing plate.
So for now I just removed all the loose metal bits and all is well. Probably as long as I never hit the parking brake at 60MPH it will be fine (those parts just provide anti-chatter for the shoes at speed, right?) But I'd really like to replace it, just because. I don't see those parts on powerstrokeshop.com. Autozone.com lists what appears to be a complete rear parking brake hardware kit for $30 (gulp!) I don't suppose anyone here happens to have a spare one laying around from a truck they took apart, or from when they put all new hardware in their rear brakes but saved the old bits, or...? I just need the one T-nail and the clip for it.

Had the same thing happen on my 03!....Weird.I got a HELP kit from a local auto parts store around my area.Try looking for one of those stores or a place that carries the HELP line. You'll find that the "T-nail" has pulled through the backing plate and can be fixed using a correct size washer, rather than replacing the backing plate.Good luck.

Ah! I forgot about the HELP! line of stuff, sure. I guess I'll have to pull the other one out to take with me and make sure I get one about the right length. It looks to me like the hole in the backing plate is OK. Given all the salt up here, it's more likely that the head of the nail rusted away enough to allow it to pull through.
Thanks,
Duncan

Here's the cheapest source of the parts I've found so far ($11-ish on powerstrokeshop.com) 1L3Z2225DA - it's definitely got the right clips and nails, I'm not sure it has the proper springs or not, but since I only need the clip and nail... I'm ordering a few other parts from them and will add this to the order, and verify here that it was the right stuff once I install it.
