Pop when replacing steering gear airbag light on. Is it the clockspring

We had to replace my power-steering gear out in the field yesterday. After fitting the steering shaft onto the gear I heard a pop the next time I turned the steering wheel, and then when I started the engine the airbag light started flashing and then stayed on steady. My brother said maybe we turned the steering shaft too much and "broke the clockspring". He has heard of this but didn't know what all it involved. I hadn't heard of the clockspring before at all and am hoping someone out there can help us out.

Sounds like you did. You aren't suppose to let the wheel turn at all with the shaft disconnected. Is your horn and cruise dead too? Sounds like you ripped the clockspring wire ribbon. You can replace it, it's not that bad if you have a steering wheel puller. It is located behind the wheel and is a plastic ring shaped thing with a couple plugs going into it. The new one will come taped down to prevent turning, don't untape it untill it's mounted in the column. Good luck

OK thanks, I'll check the horn & cruise. It's dumb luck I guess, but I replaced the power-steering gear when I first got the truck back in '06 and didn't run into this. Oh well live & learn I guess!

What Ranger_713 said.

To replace a steering gear you should start with the wheels straight ahead, tie the steering wheel in place before disconnecting the shaft, AND put the new steering gear in with it centered before reconnecting the shaft. If the wheels are turned when you reconnect the shaft, the clock spring will break on the first turn. Kind of like an old windup toy -- crick, crick, crick, twang!

When you replace the clock spring, the new one will have a tab that keeps it in the center position. Don't pull that out till you have it installed (again with the steering wheel centered and wheels straight ahead).

Send a message via AIM to nasty50
before you start to replace the clockspring, disconnect both batteries and let it set for a few minutes. dont want an accidental airbag deployment in your face close up. that would sting a little.
