Got quoted 400$ to drop out the "box" and tighten things up. Told them I'd do it myself I have the Haynes manual and extra hoses in case. My question is there any advice from anybody that has done it can give me before I tear into this sucker tonight ?
I attempted to do mine myself, it was such a pain to get to that I ended up putting in the shop. It was replaced and 3 months later failed and had to put another one in. my advice save yourself the headache and let the shop do it, if it fails they do it again free.
for what I know you don't need to take the box out to tight it..... unless there something else i don't know, you can tight it with the screw on top with is accessible in place. never took one apart so....
I purchased my son in laws 2002 7.3 Excursion. He had already installed a remanufactured steering box in an attempt to tighten up the loose play in the steering wheel. I only assume that's why you are elbow deep in replacing yours as well. The remanufactured box didn't help much. I've replaced the tie rod ends and ball joints with no reduction in the steering wheel play. I might add that the ball joints and tie rod ends were shot and needed replacing anyway.
Has anyone found that the F250/350 and Excursions simply drive like an old dump truck and we need to get over them not driving like a rack and pinion car? If that's the case I'll quit pursuing a fix and adapt.
So as an update installed me or remanned steering box new tie rod ends and had an alignment done and set only thing it fixed is the alignment haha anyway I like a little sway in my ride so I'm done messing with it but thanks for all your help fellas
The only way to get it perfectly right is to go with a redhead box and a new steering shaft.
The steering shaft wears out to. But it is often just the box that needs replacing
I'll second that. Even brand new, I have never felt any Ford steering box that has as little play as the RedHead box I have in my Excursion.
