Power Steering Box Leak

The power steering box on my truck is leaking from the cover plate on the top of the box. Is there a seal that can be replaced on the box or does the entire steering box have to replaced? I really don't want to spend the cash to replace the entire box right now but if I have to I will. How difficult is it to just change the seal if that is possible? If I have to replace the steering box should I go with a oem unit or are there any better aftermarket units available?

Re: Power Steering Box Leak

I just had to do this to my truck...in order to replace that seal you have to completely R&R the steering gear box, bearings, etc. I put a new unit on...was under $200 I believe...pretty simple to do,just be careful on the 2 lines that hook up on top.

Re: Power Steering Box Leak

I had mine start squirting out a couple years ago.

Bought a new one and replaced it.

However, upon disassembly of the bad one, I found that it was just an o-ring seal that had gotten pinched at the factory....Probably could have fixed for a fraction of the price if I could have found the o-ring...it was rather large if I recall....

Re: Power Steering Box Leak

I decided to try Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak to see if it works. I figure if that doesn't work I will just replace the steering box.

Re: Power Steering Box Leak

It will get progressively worse....mine started leaking and I didn't know where it was leaking from....every week top off the reservoir.....then one day it was pouring out....turn the wheel and it would completely gush out.......like many oz's at a time! I would fix it right now cause if it goes, so you your brakes!!!
